‘Gosh, that was a quick reply. What does it say?’ Mim looked towards Pippa.

Pippa glanced at the notification, then looked at Elle. She was silent.

‘What’s the matter?’

Pippa passed Elle the phone.

Elle hesitated before scanning the notification on the phone.

Noah Jones is now following you.

Elle felt her heart miss a beat.

Several drinks later Elle and Pippa left The Grouse and Haggis with their arms linked and ambled across the bridge into Glensheil.

‘Why don’t you send him a message?’ Pippa suggested.

‘Who?’

She rolled her eyes at Elle. ‘You know exactly who I’m talking about. Noah.’

‘And what am I going to put? “Remember me? We spent the afternoon together.”!’

‘That would set the cat amongst the pigeons. Which afternoon was it anyway?’

‘It was the fifteenth of July,’ Elle replied without hesitation.

Pippa raised her eyebrows. ‘You actually know the exact date?’ She stared at Elle. ‘I can’t remember what I did last week, never mind eight months ago! But I suppose if I was lucky enough to share a kiss with Noah, the date would be firmly planted in my mind too.’

‘I’m sure he won’t even remember,’ Elle said, deliberately avoiding her question.

‘Yes, he will. He’s followed you back.’ Pippa squeezed her arm, then did a tipsy celebratory dance on the pavement.

Elle laughed. That’s what she loved about Pippa, she was good fun and didn’t take herself too seriously. ‘He probably follows everyone back.’

‘We could soon put that theory to the test.’ Pippa had that mischievous glint in her eye again.

‘Let’s not, eh?’

‘Okay, boss. But your love life is going to be non-existent unless you take risks. Anyway, what’s the plan for the morning?’ Pippa asked. ‘We don’t want to be tripping over each other in the bathroom. What time do you normally get up?’

‘Around six.’

They strolled in silence for a minute, until Elle noticed a familiar figure walking towards them.

‘Look,’ she murmured under her breath.

Pippa looked up. ‘Oh no.’

Strolling in their direction was Nick, Pippa’s ex. They hurriedly crossed the road, hoping he wouldn’t notice them.

‘He texted me this morning.’

‘Are you kidding me? You’ve kept that quiet. Did you reply?’

‘No, and I’ve not replied to any of his texts, though I’ve been tempted. He’s sent me a few now, but I’ve made myself remember all the pain he caused me. He just keeps saying he’s made a huge mistake.’
