Then, nothing but the vast expanse of space stretched out in every direction.

Stars twinkled like countless diamonds against the inky blackness, and far-off galaxies swirled in hues of blue, purple, and red. Nebulas painted the cosmos in brilliant strokes of color. It was an infinite, boundless expanse that made me feel insignificant, reminding me of how small we truly were in the grand scheme of things.

How could humans believe they were alone in this universe?

A lump lodged itself in my throat, and tears welled up in my eyes, spilling over as an indescribable weight lifted from my chest. But it wasn't a sorrowful release; it was the profound realization of freedom enveloping me. I felt liberated, as though a colossal burden I hadn't even been aware of had been gently lifted from my shoulders.

The melodic sound of water droplets echoed throughout the room as Ky’rn made his way from the water to join me on the moss lounge sofa.

As he settled next to me, droplets cascaded off his body, creating gentle ripples on the water below. The room's muted lighting bathed him in a soft luminescence, highlighting the dark-blue scales that covered his chiseled physique, making the edges gleam like polished sapphires. Wet strands of his almost-violet hair clung to his neck and broad shoulders, glistening and emphasizing the sharp contours of his chest and arms.

Every droplet seemed to play upon the muscles that were carved with such precision, reminding me of ancient marble statues I had seen in museums on Earth. I couldn't help but marvel at my good fortune—how had I become so lucky to have such a magnificent male by my side?

His amber eyes burned with an intensity that made my heart race. A hint of worry flickered in his eyes as he studied me. His strong, scaled hand reached out, gently cupping my cheek. "Isla," he murmured, his voice deep and rich. “What troubles you?”

I took a deep breath, the weight of emotions threatening to spill. “It's just…" I began, my voice quivering slightly. “The weight of everything we've been through, the sense of newfound freedom and wonder of the unknown in the sheer enormity of the universe we're in…it's just hit me. But in this moment, with you, I finally feel free. As if no one can try to control me and I can finally do whatever I want.

“I love you so much, and I'm so eager to face whatever comes next, as long as it's with you."

He brought his face close to mine, his eyes searching mine for a long moment. "We were brought together by fate, Isla. Despite the odds, the universe conspired to make our paths cross. Every challenge, every hardship…it was all worth it, just to be here with you.”

His strong hands cradled my face, the cool contrast of his scales against my heated skin sending shivers down my spine. The world around us seemed to dissolve as the intensity of his amber eyes drew me in, their golden depths swirling with a tempest of emotions.

Then, in a slow, deliberate motion, his lips found mine.

The contact was soft at first, an exploration. His lips were cooler than mine but astonishingly soft, moving with a tenderness that belied the power contained in his form.

The kiss deepened as Ky'rn tilted his head, capturing my bottom lip between his. A soft moan escaped my throat, and the gentle touch became more urgent, more consuming.

His tongue teased the seam of my lips, seeking entrance. Granting him access, our tongues danced together, tasting and savoring each other. I clung to him, my fingers threading through his damp, violet hair, pulling him closer.

The world spun. My senses were flooded with him—the taste of the sea on his lips, the musky scent of his skin, and the powerful thrum of his hearts beneath my touch.

It was a kiss of passion, warmth, and the promise of eternity. The kind of kiss that melted away every ounce of doubt and fear, leaving behind only the raw, undeniable truth of our love.

Pulling back slightly, our foreheads touched. He gazed into my eyes with such tenderness and raw emotion. “I am completely, irrevocably in love with you, Isla,” he confessed, his voice barely a whisper. “And I eagerly await every single day I get to spend with you as my mate.”

A warm smile tugged at the corners of my lips. "You're my anchor, Ky'rn. You've become everything I've ever wanted in a partner and more. And just like you, I can't wait to start this new chapter of our life together."

EPILOGUE

Three Months Later…

ISLA

Gliding through the lavender-tinted shallows, I immersed myself in the vibrant underwater world that had become our home. Every hue of the coral, every dance of the marine creatures, had a story to tell, captivating me anew each day.

A soft smile tugged at the corners of my lips as I carefully collected samples, securing them in vials with practiced ease. My work as an marine biologist had merged beautifully with this new life off the jungle shore.

Ky'rn had taken on an assignment planetside, overseeing units tasked with defending our precious waters. It was a role that allowed him to stay close to me, and it was clear that his prince had recognized the importance of keeping us together, especially after all he had endured during his captivity.

While the idea of galactic voyages was thrilling, we both agreed that, for now, to prioritize Ky'rn’s complete recovery—spiritually, mentally, and physically—was paramount. There would be time for us to explore other worlds in the future. I longed to study new alien marine life on distant planets, but for the present, this underwater sanctuary was our haven.

And honestly, I wasn’t comfortable traveling off planet until Earth had settled its differences with the IPA. Even though I was an IPA citizen and officially mated to Ky’rn, I didn’t want to take any more chances than I already had.

Being mated to an aquatic alien had its challenges, but Ky’rn was worth it. This life was worth it, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

As I was lost in my thoughts, a familiar thrill coursed through our bond, signaling Ky'rn's return from duty. He was on the hunt—for me.
