But why did that make my heart ache?
“The future will always be murky. Why wait for it to clear when tomorrow is never guaranteed?”It was a sentiment that struck a chord in my heart, a reminder that life was unpredictable, and sometimes, you had to grasp opportunities when they presented themselves. “You feel our bond too, don’t you?”
I couldn’t deny the strange, magnetic pull that seemed to tie our souls together. But it was overwhelming, terrifying even.“This is…a lot to take in.”
His gaze held a depth of understanding, a calm patience that seemed to envelop me. It was as if his eyes were silently communicating a profound empathy, acknowledging and appreciating every unspoken thought and feeling.“I know it’s confusing, Isla. But I promise you, I will never harm you or force you into anything. I hope we—”
The heavy doors of the chamber suddenly swung open, shattering the fragile tranquility that had enveloped us, revealing a startling sight. Dr. Violet, accompanied by a formidable contingent of guards, stormed into the room, their guns raised and ready.
The sudden intrusion sent a jolt of panic through me. What were they doing here, and why did they have their guns drawn? I instinctively moved closer to Ky’rn, seeking protection and safety in his presence.
“Isla, please, don’t panic,” she urged, her tone firm but laced with genuine concern. “We will dispatch the threat and safely remove you from the tank. Your safety is our top priority.”
My heart pounded in my chest with the instinctive need to protect Ky’rn. I couldn’t let them harm him; he was not a threat.
“No! Everything is fine,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. “This is a horrible misunderstanding. Stand down!”
Dr. Violet’s expression reflected her concern, but she remained resolute. “Isla, I understand you want to protect him, but I won’t jeopardize your life. Your grandfather will have my head if anything happens to you. Please, let us handle this situation.”
I clenched my teeth in frustration. “He’s not a threat! Stand down, please!”
She hesitated, looking torn. A few agonizing seconds passed, and I could see her giving orders to the guards, signaling them to hold their positions, with their weapons drawn.
Taking a deep breath, she said, “I trust you, Isla. But if anything goes wrong, it’s on you.”
I nodded, tears blurring my vision. “Thank you.”
Ky’rn’s amber eyes blazed with frustration as he glared at the guards who had stormed into the room.“I am insulted,”he rumbled, his deep mental voice filled with righteous anger.“I am an honorable commander. I would never harm you or any civilian. Why do they believe that I’m a threat?”
“Ky’rn, just look at our position,”I said, gesturing. My legs were wrapped around his waist and he had me pinned against the unyielding tank wall.
He huffed in frustration.“I was merely communicating with you, not attacking you.”
I couldn’t help but roll my eyes, although the situation was anything but amusing.“I know you wouldn’t harm me,”I said, my mental voice firm.“But they don’t. In order to defuse this situation, I need to go, before things escalate.”
He looked torn, his gaze shifting between me and the guards who were now forming a perimeter around the tank.“When will you return?”he asked, his tone holding a note of longing.
I glanced at the unwelcome visitors, unsure of what awaited me beyond the tank’s walls.“I don’t know when,”I admitted, a sense of uncertainty creeping over me.“But I promise, I will return as soon as I’m able. I will make them understand.”
My heart thudded loudly in my ears as he nodded, his amber eyes softening with a depth of emotion I hadn’t seen before.“I will wait,”he murmured, his mental voice brushing against my thoughts like a whisper of a gentle sea breeze,“until you can grace me with your light once more.”
With a final, tender look, he released his hold on me and gracefully swam away, disappearing into the depths of the tank. The sudden absence of his solid frame caused me to flounder momentarily, my limbs struggling against the buoyancy of the water.
I watched, almost mesmerized, as his powerful tail propelled him to the farthest end of the tank. His form, even as it retreated, seemed like a shimmering mirage of strength and grace. His last words to me resonated in the hollow silence of my heart.
Until you can grace me with your light once more.
Those words would haunt me.
Blinking back the sudden surge of emotions, I found myself floating aimlessly in the vast tank. The weight of the bodysuit, mixed with the realization of what had transpired, made every move feel sluggish, every breath a tad heavier.
“Isla!” Dr. Violet’s voice echoed from above.
The sound of splashing water and her outstretched hand guided me to the surface. She gripped me firmly, almost desperately, and helped me hoist myself out of the tank. The air outside was a sharp contrast to the water’s embrace; every droplet that slid down my bodysuit left me feeling cold and bereft.
“You scared me half to death,” Dr. Violet murmured, her fingers brushing wet tendrils of hair away from my face as she inspected me for injuries. There was genuine concern etched into her features, eyes scanning me to ensure I was unharmed.
I tried to muster a smile, though it felt feeble, and my voice was barely above a whisper. “I’m okay, really.”
