Elara

My body felt broken.

Not the good broken, but the bad broken where it was a million degrees outside, and my air conditioning had just died kind of broken.

I knew what it was, but I refused to accept it.

Quinn told me my first heat without suppressants would be worse than a normal one because of how much I had prevented my body from it, but I never fathomed it would feel like this!

I had just fucked the energy out of poor Jaxom, as he lay hopeless in his bed and was dead to the world. How was I able to move his arms and legs from being wrapped up around me without waking him up?

Shouldn’t an average person wake up to someone moving their limbs?

Leaning closer, I poked Jaxom’s cheek but to no avail.

I needed Seth.

He would know. Seth was a medic. The clan’s medic.

If anyone had the answer, it would be him.

Scanning the room, my gaze landed on my alpha’s shirt. I scooped it off of the floor and put it on as I rushed down the hall to the infirmary.

No one was in sight, and that was a good thing because I didn’t want them to think I had just done something to Jaxom.

Only that I had…

Keeping my head down, I closed my eyes as I rushed into the medbay.

“Seth.” I winced at the way my voice sounded more like a whimper as I tried to keep myself from crying. “I need your help.”

“What is it, Elara?”

Instantly, he was at my side, and without another word, he wrapped his arm around me. He sucked in a deep breath and stumbled as he led me to a medical bed. I sat down with my head down and was ashamed of what was happening.

I shouldn’t have waited to pick my pack.

It was known that an omega usually picks the first members of her pack within the first few days--but I had thought that I had more time.

And now, I was at the beginning of my heat and had just claimed my first member. I didn’t want to do it this way, but I knew I had no choice.

An alpha couldn’t keep up with the demands of their omega whenever she’s in heat. That was why it was essential for the omega to establish a pack. If they didn’t have any, or their pack was away, honored clan members were permitted to enter the omega’s nest, knowing that it would be temporary.

Palming my cheek, he lifted my face to look at him.

“It’s okay, Elara.”

“No, it’s not okay,” I spat. “I wanted to claim you before I went into heat, and now that it’s here, it’s no longer special.”

“You want to claim me?” he asked, his voice filled with shock. “But I am just a medic.”

“And I am jobless,” I countered, frowning. “Why does it matter?”

“Because I may have to leave during emergencies.” He rubbed his thumb along my cheek. “And I am afraid I won’t be good enough.”

“Why is that?” My eyebrows scrunched in confusion.

“If I am gone often, I am afraid that one time will be too much, and when I return, I will no longer be needed,” he confessed as he closed his eyes in shame. “I know you want me, but I don’t want to accept a position in your pack, only to fall hard and get my heart broken in return.”
