He snorted and put on his shirt.“Yeah, right.I won’t sleep until I catch Trevor.”

She cocked her head.“You still think it’s him?”

“Hell yeah.”

“But—but he was here when the door was open.He couldn’t have gotten to the back door before us.”

A glimmer of doubt tightened Jaxon’s features.“Yeah, well there’s that.”

“That’s a big indication in my opinion.”

“Maybe he has someone working with him.I don’t know. The guy gives me a weird vibe. The way he looks at you...And he sure as shit wasn’t happy to see me here.”

McKenna folded her arms in front of her chest.“He didn’t look too bothered—just surprised.”

Jaxon caught her elbows and towed her to his chest.“Trust me, babe.I know a jealous man when I see one.He was livid but he hid it well, which is even more of a red flag.”

She caught a small piece of his shirt in her fingertips and spun the material around her nail.

He lifted her chin with his knuckle.“You don’t think it was him?Or you don’t want it to be?”

She twisted her lips.“To be honest, he came to mind first.Even though I thought it was unlikely he’d come back for more trouble, my gut got sick every time I thought about him.But when he came to the door and said he’d been making deliveries all day, and then someone entered while he was here...it just seems more likely someone is watching the cabin and jumped at the opportunity while we were distracted.”

“Do you think they wanted something?”

She moved closer to him. While she’d treated him, the sharp fear that had been closing in on her with every breath had receded. Now, it came back in droves.Jaxon rocked her in his arms, silently pressing her for answers.

“I think whoever it is wants to scare me.”

Jaxon nodded slowly.“If it was Trevor, don’t you think he’d want his name cleared after what happened between you two?I mean, I don’t think the dude’s a genius by any stretch, but it doesn’t take much for someone to line up an alibi.A few people who can vouch that he was delivering goods with the double whammy of making him look like an upstanding citizen. All he’d need is one friend to open your back door.Hell, he could have waited for the intruder to retreat from your property and then picked him up.”

His words sank through her thoughts with the speed of quicksand.“It could still be him.”She fisted her hand in her hair.“Dammit.Things are going to get even worse if I press charges.”

“Hey.”Jaxon smoothed his hands over her cheeks.“He’s not going to do a damn thing. He has me to answer to now, and I’m going to pay him a private visit as soon as this storm passes.”

Panic swept through her.“Uh, no.I don’t think—”

He pressed his lips to hers in a swift, soft kiss.“Leave it with me.For now, let’s go to bed. We’re both beat.”

His hands fell from her face, and she tugged on a strand of her hair. She didn’t want to sleep alone.Didn’t want any separation between them, period. But would spending the night in the same bed cross a boundary he wasn’t ready to cross?

He stood, picked up the flashlight from the coffee table she’d left it on, and illuminated the hall.“I hope you don’t mind if I bunk with you.I’ll sleep a lot easier if I’m close to you.”His arm wrapped around her protectively, but his words offered more security.

He wasn’t doing it just to make her feel safe.He wanted to be close to her, too.

“I’d like that.”She grabbed the extra blanket from the armchair, led the way to the bedroom, and crawled under the sheets next to him.She settled her cheek on his shoulder, and he pulled the crook of her knee over his thigh.

“It’s freezing,” she breathed. She burrowed her nose into his skin, and the warmth of his chest pushed away some of the cold.

“Our bodies will start generating heat. And if not, there’s other ways we can stay warm.”

She laughed and pinched his side.“I knew that was coming.”

He stilled.“I was talking about rekindling the fire. But I’m down for whatever you have in mind too.”

Heat scorched her cheeks, but his soft chuckle pushed away any embarrassment.

“I think I am going to add more logs to the fire. It’s damn cold.”He threw back the covers, and McKenna soon heard logs banging together.Jaxon returned a minute later and slid in next to her.
