Lucky for us, Miguel’s phone alarm was set to automatically go off on Saturday mornings, or we surely would have slept right through the beginning of our shifts at Moonlight. Thankfully, we had a good coffee maker and excellent coffee on hand, so we were properly caffeinated when we headed to the hotel.
We took my car because I was more awake since I was used to getting up early. As we walked into the hotel, Miguel asked, “Are you sure you’re okay driving us? I don’t get out until seven. You’ll be done at four.”
I shrugged. “I put my gear in the back. I’ll just go for a run on the boardwalk. I have training coming up next weekend. I have to keep in shape, or they’ll kick my ass.”
Miguel’s brow creased. “I forgot about that. When do you have to leave?”
“Very early Saturday morning. I’ll be back Sunday night.” I opened the lobby door for him and followed him inside.
He poked his bottom lip out in a pretty good imitation of Cody. “Do you have to go? Can’t you call in sick?”
I burst out laughing. “I’d have to be in the hospital for them to let me out of training.”
He sniffed. “Well, we don’t want that. I suppose I’ll find something to do with my time.”
I stopped outside his office door and pulled him in for a kiss. “I’ll miss you too.” I booped his nose and added, “I should tell you I’ve decided to separate from the Army. I have a lot going on now. I’ll be starting school in the fall for my certification. Tommy needs me to work every fourth Saturday. And best of all, I have you. I don’t want to miss any time I could spend with you now that I’ve found you.”
Miguel’s eyes got shiny. “Damn it. You can’t make me cry before I have to go to work.”
Someone cleared their throat nearby. We turned to find Carrie standing there, smiling at us. “You two are so stinking cute together.”
I felt myself blush and Miguel’s cheeks turned pink. “Thanks. Did you need me for something?”
She nodded. “The French doors are stuck, and we can’t open them all the way for the brunch service.”
“All right. I’ll get my tools out of my car and be right there.” I kissed Miguel one more time. “I’ll see you later.”
As I was walking to my car, my phone vibrated with a call. I pulled it out of my pocket and saw it was my sister calling. I swiped to answer. “Hey, Allie, what’s up?”
“I was wondering if you could do me a huge favor.”
“It depends on what and when,” I replied.
“I was wondering if you could watch Cody for a few hours tonight. There’s a concert at Wonder Bar that Marissa and I want to go to, but Steve is away on business. Her mother is watching Emma, but I can’t ask her to watch Cody. She hardly knows him.”
I blew out a sigh. I really wanted to spend time with Miguel. “What time is the concert and when does it end?”
“It starts at seven and it’s over by eight-thirty.” She blew out a breath. “Please, Zach. I had a really rough week. I just need a little time for myself.”
I squeezed my eyes shut. Damn it. I hoped Miguel would be okay with it. “Fine. But you have to promise to come back right after the concert. Both of us are working today.”
She squealed. “I will. I promise. Thank you so much!”
“Sure. No problem. I’ll see you later.” I sighed when I ended the call. I was really looking forward to hanging out with Miguel. Well, eight-thirty wasn’t that late. We’d have plenty of time after she took Cody home.
CHAPTERTHIRTY-SIX
MIGUEL
I settled into my desk chair, wincing slightly. Zach really had made me feel him today. A smile curved my lips. He never ceased to surprise me. He may have been shy and hesitant in the beginning, but damn, he was a beast in bed when you got him going. My aching ass was a testament to that.
I opened my laptop and pulled up the spreadsheet for Albert’s show. It was less than two weeks away, and I was making sure we were on schedule with everything that had to be done. Albert had agreed to use the pianist Sean recommended. Albert said he was very good and familiar with most of the music already. Ticket sales were good, although we weren’t sold out yet. I was sure we would be by the day of the show. Chef Joanna had recommended high-end finger foods be served since the show started at nine. Carrie had the bar service well in hand. Everything looked great.
I was deep into my paperwork when my phone vibrated with a call. To my surprise, it was my sister. “Hello, hermana. How are you doing today?”
“Really good,” she replied with an obvious smile.
“Oh yeah? What happened to make it so good?”
