It was warm there now.
“Do you want to get ready first? Bathroom?”
Was I imagining it or were Jesse’s eyes heated? His gaze flicked down to my chest, my thin T-shirt probably not doing much to disguise what was underneath. The plan tomorrow was to explore the chateau, the grounds, and I had every intention of spending some time in my bikini by the pool with a book. I’d finished writing my second romance and it was now with my editor, so I’d given myself this break to relax, read, and decide what the next in the series would focus on. When I had that bikini on, he’d be seeing a lot more.
“If that’s okay?” I’d already found my toiletries bag. “While you’re in there after me, I’ll get changed.”
“Sure.”
I brushed my teeth and used the toilet, giving my face a quick wash and putting on moisturiser.
Jesse was lying on his back on the bed when I came out. “What do you think your brother would say about us sharing a room like this?” He stared at the ceiling.
An owl hooted somewhere nearby.
“I don’t think he’d say anything. I can text him and tell him, or tell Amber?”
Jesse sat up. “He wouldn’t charter a plane out here and rip my balls off?”
“Only if you did something really horrible to me would he do that. Bathroom’s yours. I’ll get changed.” I’d found the vest top I brought to sleep in. It was a tight fitted, cropped top, which was soft and old and comfortable. It revealed a lot of skin, and I knew Jesse would be able to see the outline of my nipples through it, but it was dark enough in the room to not look too indecent.
I wore that and my underwear, smothering a grin at the idea of him sleeping in his jeans or something.
That grin was wiped straight off when he came out of the bathroom in just a pair of shorts.
Smooth skin over cut muscles was only highlighted by the glow of the lights. A saga of tattoos was patterned over his body, each an unknown chapter that had been read only by him.
I sat up, letting the sheets drop to my waist. His eyes left mine, dropping to my breasts and lingering there for a moment.
We’d opened the windows because the night was warm and the air con hadn’t yet been fitted in this room. A cool breeze ruffled the drapes at the window and chilled my nipples.
I didn’t hide how they’d hardened.
Jesse didn’t try to hide how he was looking at them.
He climbed in bed next to me, his weight only slightly moving the mattress, and he lay down on his back.
“I can sleep on the sofa if you want.”
I lay back down and faced him, keeping to my own side. “I’m fine with you there. Let’s make an agreement though.”
“What’s that?” His voice was raspy, maybe with tiredness.
“Whatever happens, neither of us is embarrassed about it.” Because the chances were I’d wake wrapped around him or he’d have morning wood.
“Fine. I promise not to tease you about your snoring.” His eyes closed.
“I don’t snore.”
“I’ll let you know in the morning.”
I stretched a leg out to kick him under the cover, but instead stilled it as soon as it touched his skin.
Maybe we should’ve made a wall of pillows after all.
