“What do you mean? Because she is – she’s–”
Genny laughed, looking at me as if she thought I was stupid, which I possibly was. “Date her. Take her out for a meal. Do things together as a couple, or with your girls.”
“She said she didn’t want–” I shut up, because when she’d said she didn’t want kids, she hadn’t been pregnant. And I’d seen her with my girls – this morning, when they’d been worried about her, she’d reassured them. She’d looked after them like a mother would.
I’d already told her that I could fall in love with her, now I knew I had.
“Get the picture, Nathan?”
I nodded. “Cheers, Gen.”
“Welcome. Let me know about the interview.”
Zara and Libbie were in bed when I got home. In fact, everyone was in bed. The kitchen was cleared, glasses and cereal boxes set out for the morning, which meant our nanny was getting into the routine, because Jez wasn’t that organised. The kettle was slightly warm, so someone had a late cup of tea.
I headed upstairs to my room, popping in to check on Libbie and Zara and finding them sound asleep, Zara’s arm wrapped round her favourite stuffed dog. Lib had starfished across the mattress, her face angelic.
When I went into my room, Amber was sat up in bed, reading her kindle, her hair loose around her shoulders and the duvet pulled up around her.
“Hey. That was some penalty save.” She put her kindle down and smiled at me. “Decent win.”
I nodded, starting to pull off my hoodie and T-shirt over my head, leaving me in just my sweats. “You saw the presser afterwards?”
She nodded. “I did. It was going to get asked at some point. Don’t worry about it.” But she didn’t look over the moon about it, which I got.
“Genny suggested we do an interview together for the club website.”
Amber shrugged and smiled. “Probably the best way to deal with it. Did she suggest I was in it too?”
“Yep. Shall we get it over with?”
“I think so.” She sounded distracted, watching me with wide eyes.
I pulled off my sweats. “I showered straight after the game.” I paused, frowning. “Is everything okay? You look like you’re in pain.”
She lay back on the bed, still watching me, her eyes dropping down to my cock that really did like her looking there.
“Nate.”
“Amber.” I walked round the bed and sat on my side – or what seemed to now be my side.
“The doctor said it was fine to, you know–”
“You spoke to the doctor?”
“She called today, to check I was okay and reassure me. But I asked if it was still okay for me to have sex.” Her voice was quiet as if she was embarrassed.
What wasn’t embarrassed was my cock. It was now wide awake and very, very hopeful.
“She said it was fine, as long as it wasn’t too rough.” Her cheeks blushed. “I get if it would be too weird for you.” She sunk further under the covers as if she was hoping I’d pretend she hadn’t said anything.
There was no way I could pretend she hadn’t said anything.
“Amber, I–”
