“Sure. And thank you.”
“It’s my job.”
I was on my own again. Waiting. And waiting. And waiting.
Finally, there was a flicker of eyelids and a moan. I pressed the buzzer the nurse had pointed out and grasped Liam’s hand.
“Hey.”
His eyes opened.
“I’m here. You’re okay.”
He looked at me and stared. I figured he was disorientated.
“It’s me -- Sophie.”
He coughed. I reached for the water the nurse had told me he could have a sip of.
“What the fuck are you doing here?”

Liam
My head hurt.
My bones hurt.
Everything hurt including my heart. Things were blurry and it was too bright. I didn’t quite know where I was, whether I was in England or Iceland.
A nurse came in and checked things, asked me questions, touched my skin which for some reason made me feel sick. She spoke in a different language, one I was beginning to recognise, so I knew I wasn’t in England.
“You okay?” The voice was vaguely familiar.
I moved my head and my eyes started to focus. Seph Callaghan sat on the chair next to me.
“Thought you were Sophie.”
He didn’t smile. “She’s gone back to the hotel.”
“The spa?” I wanted her to be in the thermal pools, relaxing. Happy.
“The one next to the hospital.”
“Oh.” I remembered waking up and seeing her. I remembered what I said. I’d fallen straight back to sleep again afterwards and now she was gone.
I wasn’t surprised. I wouldn’t have hung around after that either.
“Is she okay?”
Seph sighed long and loud. “It depends how you defineokay. She’s feeling pretty shitty.”
I remembered the text and her not being there. I called Amber for the last time, and then Seph.
I remembered driving, the snow and the ice on the road. Then the truck and the impact when I went into the side.
There was nothing after that.
