“Who was she with?”
“I don’t know. It was a man. He kept his face out of view of pretty much every single camera I could get into. He knew where they were and was clearly being super cautious. I’d like to say I can match him with someone from Fletcher’s mob – I know Matilda was involved with one of his soldiers – but it’d be guesswork.” Indy edged closer to the door. “I’ll get what I have over to you. You can see it for yourself.”
“Any chance of finding out what she was at the hospital for? And how recent it was?” Alex needed more. He knew this could be the glimmer that Abby had been searching for during the last two years.
“It was May first,” Indy said. “And it was a gynaecology appointment. I know that from the cameras and where she was in the hospital. I can get into the system and get her notes in the next few days.”
Alex nodded. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome. I have more stuff for you, but I have an appointment I need to get to myself.” She opened the door.
“Need your nails doing? Or maybe a sense of humour implant.” Drew’s words vibrated through the room.
Indy paused; her sigh visible. “Actually, I’m going visiting my aunt. We don’t know how long she has left and I promised I’d sit with her this afternoon.”
Drew’s arms dropped to his sides. “Your aunt Elizabeth?”
Alex had no idea what the history was between these two.
“Yes.” Indy’s voice was soft.
“I didn’t know she was ill.” There was regret in his words. “I had no idea.”
“She wanted it kept quiet.”
“You should’ve told me.” There was no malice there. Alex just heard his hurt.
Indy shook her head. “She wanted it to be kept quiet. And it’s been sudden. We only found out three weeks ago – aggressive brain tumour. Nothing can be done.”
“Can I see her?”
Indy nodded slowly, as if she was having to consider it carefully. “She’d like that. She had a soft spot for you.”
“Unlike her niece, clearly.” Loneghan chipped in. “Someone has to like you, O’Malley.” He shifted up. “Need a lift anywhere, Indy?”
She shook her head. “I’m good. Have scooter. Will travel.”
Alex glanced at Drew, saw how he’d withdrawn into himself even stood there. Curiosity almost got the better of him and he wanted to ask what his beef with Indy was, but there was more pressing issues to deal with. Like whether or not to tell Abby what he’d learned.
“What more do we need to cover? Before Lonny heads off.” Alex glanced between the three of them.
“Garrison. As far as holiday bookings go, he’s still on a jolly. The fact that he’d headed back into the country secretly tells us he’s got something on,” Loneghan said. “I’m trying to keep tabs on him – we really need to find out whose payroll he’s on, because I don’t think it’s Fletcher’s.”
“It’s someone more senior in the force,” Alex had thought this for a while. “There’s no other way that Garrison would’ve been transferred to Severton. He’s in someone’s pocket.”
Loneghan gave a nod. “We need to know who, but I’ve had no joy finding out so far, and trust me, it’s top of my list.”
“I can dig around a little more.” Indy’s hand was still on the door handle. “But it’s one of those – I need to be super careful. There are better hackers than me looking into things at the moment.”
“You can see where they’ve been?” Loneghan looked over at her.
Indy nodded. “I’ve seen where things have been changed too. That’s why I’m not totally sure that the girl in the CCTV is Matilda, Alex. Someone could be playing with us. Your PI has no links to anyone that I can find, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t known that Abby’s been looking. Her money’s back in her account, by the way.”
“I’ll let her know. I’ll tell her about Tilly too. I know it isn’t definite but…”
“She needs hope.” Drew finished his sentence. “Ironically that’s her surname.”
“I have to go,” Indy checked her watch. “It’s been a pleasure. Apart from Drew. That’s just torture.”
