She kisses him and then he puts his mouth down to suck on her nipples, the catch in her throat audible as he turns her on and I want it to be me.

No, I don’t.

I want to be with them.

Sucking on the other, putting my hands where he’s putting his, being close enough to smell if she’s turned on.

I watch him touch her between her legs; maybe he’s fingering her. Maybe he’s just stroking because they’ve not done that yet and I’m taking my cock out of my jeans and using my hand as I watch them.

He lies her down on the ground and I wonder if he’s going to fuck her, but he doesn’t. Instead, he puts his mouth between her legs and eats her out, making her come.

Making her say his name.

Ben.

Ben.

Ben.

Ben.

Chapter Nine

“You know her bodyguard was affiliated with the group that wants Norway to annex Scotland?”

I stare at the book in my hands. It’s a leather bound copy of Little Women and I have no idea why it’s in William’s study.

He paces up and down the room, his hands busy pulling at the tie that’s partially wrapped around his hands. If I said I hadn’t fantasied about taking the tie off him and strangling him with it, I’d be lying. I’d killed enough people this month.

“His mother was some raving lunatic who brainwashed him to do what he could to ensure that Scotland ended up under Norway’s rule. That’swhy he got himself into Blair’s bed. That’swhy she refused to sign the agreement.” He throws the tie down to the floor and I’m pretty sure he also stamps his foot.

I continue to stare at the book. I have no desire to get into this debate with William, although I’m pretty sure it’s going to be inevitable.

“How did he take so many people in? He was a liar and a traitor. I don’t believe for one minute that he’s dead. He’s sitting there laughing at Blair and me and you. For fuck’s, Isaac, you’ve been spending more time there than anyone. Surely you must’ve noticed something?”

I put the book down. There’s no getting out of this conversation.

“He was involved in her security. He had links via his sister to various extremist groups, but has never been directly linked with any of them and now he’s missing.”

“Presumed dead. It’s in the media – he’s been acting for them for years. Think of all of what he knows.” If white had a paler shade, William was that now.

“What did you do? What does he know about you?” I stand up, edge towards the piece of flesh and blood I never asked for.

William looks at the wall behind my head, not answering.

“Is there something I need to know?”

“No. Nothing.”

“What did you do?”

Fire flashes in his eyes.

“What did you do?”

He sits down, slumps, in the leather fireside chair that’s been a family heirloom according to my grandfather.

“You need to tell me. If anything is going to get out, we need a plan.”
