I wondered why Victoria knew her name. “She’s good.” Even I could hear that the words were loaded.

“And?”

I groaned. I didn’t talk about shit like this, nothing that required me to put a name to a feeling.

“We’ve gotten along really well. It’s been good to catch up.”

“And?”

“Jesus. You’re fucking persistent, aren’t you?”

“Yep. Ask Max. Tell me about her. You knew her at vet school?”

“I did. She went out with one of my best friends. We carried on being friends when they split up.”

“Max said you liked her as more than a friend.”

I’d never told him that. “Not sure where he’s got that impression from…”

“Because when he went to see you after some placement where you’d been living together, he said you were so down he considered forcing you to go to the doctor.”

“He’s a dick.”

“Yes, I don’t disagree with you there. But he has a huge dick so that makes up for it.”

“Too much information.”

“What are you doing today? Something good.”

“When Wren’s finished her massage and scrub in the hammam we’re going to walk to Jemma El-Fnaa and the souks. Take some photos.”

“So you’re spending your day off with her?”

“We’re friends.”

She chuckled. “Me and Max were friends once.”

“We still are.” The voice on the phone miraculously changed. “She’s doing okay. You need to stop worrying.”

“That’s a lot easier said than done.”

“Worse case is that they’ll have to remove a large portion of her small bowel. That’s worse case. They know what they’re doing.”

“I wish I was there.”

“I don’t, because you’d be a pissing pain in the arse. You’d be flapping round the hospital looking like someone had… never mind.”

I laughed. “Victoria’s just told you to shut the fuck up, hasn’t she?”

“Yeah, well. Jackson deliberately didn’t let Seph change the date for the trial because he would’ve been worse if that makes you feel any better.”

“Not really.”

“Callum, go and enjoy whatever you’re doing. Orwhoeveryou’re doing. Or Wren, because I’m pretty sure that given your posts on every form of social media, you’re in deep with her again.”

“I was not depressed after that time at college.”

Max laughed. “You were. The only time I’d ever seen you have a taste of your own medicine. I told Jackson and he didn’t believe me. He’d already written you off as being too damaged with how you weren’t brought up.”
