His eyes were shining but his body was still frozen and he’d reverted to two syllable words.

Then he smiled.

“I think your news wins.”

He stood up and came to me, pulling me up into his arms and kissing me long and deep enough to become slightly indecent. His hands dropped to my waist and then he spread one across my stomach. “How do you feel? Are you happy?”

I laughed. “Yes. A little shocked and worried but I get to have a baby. With you.”

He looked up, face serious. “I can’t believe how fucking lucky I am.”

There were tears flowing down my cheeks. I tried to wipe them away, hating anyone to see me cry.

Jack caught my hands. “Stop. Unless they’re happy tears.”

“They’re happy tears.”

He nodded. “I don’t know if I should take you to bed or wrap you in cotton wool or talk to you some more about contracts.”

“I’m good with you buying in. Phillip rang and told me.”

Jack took a step back. “I asked him not to say anything.”

“And he told me that. But he wanted to ask me, because if I didn’t like the idea, he’d refuse to sell – he has no one pressuring him now; not until he finds his next fiancée. Besides, if we’re having a baby together, owning a business is a minor commitment.”

“You can still have final say in the menu.”

I smiled. Since peeing on a stick and watching for blue lines, my interest in the menu had waned by about three per cent. “I’ll have the final say in most things.”

“You’re pregnant?”

I laughed loudly. “Do you want to see the tests?”

He nodded. “Do you think it’ll be a boy?”

“Do you want a boy?”

“I want a baby. With you.”

“That’s fortunate. Because we’re having one.” I lead him out of the kitchen and upstairs to our room and into the ensuite. The tests were on the side, neatly lined up. I’d figured he’d want to see them.

“Look.”

He peered over at them.

“Positive.”

“Yes. I’m making an appointment at my doctors. I’ll make an early one so you can come too. Before we go in work.”

He was saying very little, but his hands weren’t leaving me.

“Jack? Are you okay?”

“Yes. Just a little… happy. I’m not shocked; we weren’t using anything. We kind of planned it.” He looked down between us to my stomach, then he dropped down and crouched, kissing my belly, making me giggle and want to melt.

“I’m glad I employed you.”

He tipped his head back and laughed. “I’m glad I accepted. Even though my boss was a workaholic with no time for her employees or herself.”
