He scarpered; the slightly early finish a bigger treat than collecting gossip.
Two minutes later, a tall, dark figure appeared at the doorway. “We talked about security at home. I’m thinking we need to have a more thorough discussion about it for here.”
Keren put her hands in the pockets of her white coat. “Kiefer’s only just gone.”
“If I got in, any one could’ve.”
“I don’t need to be patronised, Scott.” He was testing her. And as soon as he lay down in that chair she could hurt him in many different ways. Unfortunately, she wasn’t able to use any of them.
“If it’s patronising, you should’ve had the sense to lock the door as soon as you were on your own.”
“Fine. Sit down in the chair. I need to have a look at how it’s healed and then we can discuss options.”
She took out her torch and spatula, looking at his general oral health, which was good, and the gap that had been left. With her professional head on she advised him on what they could do and what the options were.
“We’re done.” She pulled off her gloves. “You’re good to go and continue chatting girls up in your bar. Were they old enough to drink, by the way?”
His face broke out into a smile. “You were jealous.”
“You were trying to make me jealous.”
“You’re right. I was pissed off that you wouldn’t let me kiss you in front of everyone.” His eyes flared.
“I know.” She stood next to him. He’d made no effort to get off the chair, instead lounging there, watching her.
“Would you kiss me now?” His voice was as smooth as the richest of milk chocolate and his eyes the same colour.
Her heart rate went up a notch and between her legs started to glow, a need arising. “I’m at work. I have to be professional.”
“What time do you finish?”
“About twenty minutes ago.”
“It’s a kiss. You wouldn’t kiss me in my place of work, but can I kiss you in yours?”
His hair was down, curling about his jaw, but his beard looked like it had been recently trimmed, maybe that morning.
“You were flirting with those girls…”
“And I told you why. And that nothing happened. Everyone has figured us out, Key. This is Severton. The only secrets here are the ones that are taken to the grave. But I get it if you’re not ready for more.”
She took a step closer, leaning over him. As big as he was, as muscular, he looked vulnerable in her dentist’s chair. Leaning over, she touched her lips to his as softly as she could, the feeling of taking advantage sitting uncomfortably with her.
Then powerful arms took hold of her. He had sat up, swinging her onto his knee, somehow avoiding the arm of the chair. “Not a kiss like you’d give your gran.”
“If you gave your gran kisses like that I’d be worried.”
He’d managed to manoeuvre her into straddling him, his eyes fixed on hers. “I meant what I said last night in that message.”
“I’m your only type.”
He nodded. “Meant it, Key. I blew my chances fourteen years ago. I’m not blowing this one. And you knew nothing was going to happen with me and either of those two girls.”
“True. But it made me angry because I knew you were doing it on purpose.”
“Why did it make you angry?”
She was backed into a corner. The man had skills.
