MEN’S HOCKEY NEWS: THE SCOREBOARD RECAP

Buffalo Forward Logan Granger Benched Amid Struggles, Locker Room Tensions

December 30— Buffalo’s disappointing season hit a new low Tuesday night when head coach Frank Wilson made the surprising decision to healthy scratch veteran forward Logan Granger, who watched from the press box as Carolina put on a show, serving the home team a miserable 4-1 loss.

Granger, 29, has been a consistent offensive producer for Buffalo over his nine-year NHL career, but has struggled since American Thanksgiving. After posting a career high 18 goals and 12 assists through the first quarter of the season, the former first-round pick has managed just two goals and three assists in his last 15 games.

“Consistency matters more than flash. That’s the message,” Wilson said tersely in his post-game press conference when asked about the scratch.

The benching comes at an awkward time for Granger, who will be in Las Vegas tomorrow for his 30th birthday. Buffalo will play in Sin City on New Year’s Day, the start of a four-game west coast swing.

Sources close to the team suggest the decision may be about more than just Granger’s recent production. Multiple players have expressed frustration with Wilson’s rigid defensive system, which several veterans believe is stifling the team’s offensive creativity.

“There’s definitely been some tension,” one unnamed player told reporters. “Coach has his way of doing things, and some guys think there might be better approaches. But at the end of the day, we’re professionals. We have to buy in.”

Granger, known for his creative playmaking and offensive instincts, has particularly struggled to adapt to Wilson’s structured, defense-first approach. His ice time has been steadily declining over the past month, dropping from nearly 18 minutes per game in November to under 14 minutes in recent contests.

His status for the games in Nevada and California remains uncertain.

For a team sitting dead last in their division, the internal discord couldn’t come at a worse time. With the trade deadline still months away and playoff hopes already fading, the remainder of the season is shaping up to be a test of patience for players, coaches, and fans alike.

Granger did not speak to media after being scratched.

The Sabres depart for Las Vegas tomorrow morning. As of the time of publication, no curfew will be imposed, so the birthday boy should be able to celebrate with his teammates. Their New Year’s Day game is scheduled for 6 p.m. local time.

Whether Granger will be in the lineup remains to be seen.

CHAPTER 1

LOGAN

For a lot of people in Vegas, waking up on New Year’s Day means grappling with the consequences of questionable choices.

But I have a hockey game later today. Aprofessionalhockey game. I am, at all times, aprofessionalhockey player. So why am I sure, even before I open my eyes, that the questionable choices I got into last night were life-changing?

A hissing sound cuts through the cotton in my head. The shower. Someone is in the shower in my hotel bathroom.

And that’s when I becomeveryaware of a ring on my finger. A cool metal band on my left hand, where I’ve never worn a ring before.

Lifting my fist, I stare at it, and then the closed bathroom door. Back and forth, back and forth. What the fuck?

Someone is in my shower.

My wife.

That’s my wife in there. The thought is both terrifying and—oddly—thrilling.

I’m married.
