Walker nods. “It’s not selfish to chase your dreams. Your dad did it. Penny did it. Hell, I’m doing it. Why shouldn’t you?”

I shake my head. “Because wanting those things kept me from being here.”

“You know what your dad always said?”

I offer a sad smile. “You can’t keep a wildflower in one place.”

He nods. “But I don’t think he meant it the way you thought he did. He didn’t mean you couldn’t stay here, Tally. I think what he meant was that you’re a force to be reckoned with. Someone who goes after what she wants and doesn’t stop until she gets it. He understood you, Tally. So do I. And he was proud of you. Just like I am.”

I laugh despite the tears streaming down my face. “God, I’m such a mess.”

Walker smiles at me. “You’re the most stunning mess I’ve ever seen.”

“Flattery will get you laid.” I swipe at my nose, and I’m pretty sure drool comes off on my arm.

He hands me a napkin. “As tempting as that sounds, I actually have other plans.”

I blink, embarrassed that I’ve kept him here for so long when he clearly has a job to do. “I’m sorry.”

Walker runs a thumb beneath my eyes and cups my cheek. “None of that, remember.” He glances at the clock. “I think we both deserve a break today. What do you say we bring Quinn an ICEE before his game and then grab dinner with him and Billie?”

A soft smile plays at my lips. “That’s sweet, though I’m surprised you’re actually going to take a break.”

“Well, someone told me there’s more to life than work.” He hums. “I’ll go tell everyone that we’re done for the day. You gonna shower and come along with me?”

I bite my lip. “Okay.”

His face lights up. “Really?”

“Really, Cowboy.”

And for the first time, I let myself think that staying in Hope Harborcouldbe the dream after all.

HOPE HARBOR TOWN CHAT

FLETCHER:Hi Walker! We’re so excited that you signed up to judge the derby race! See you Thursday at the town meeting!

RAYNA:Hi Walker. The PTA thought it would be fun to have you come in to talk to the first grade about being a farmer. Does Wednesday at 10 work?

STEW:Hi Walker! Was wondering if you wanted to join us guys for a beer at the bowling alley Friday? We could use another player in our league.

“Oh, for fuck’s sake,” I grumble when my phone buzzes in my hand again. This is what I get for having my own people.

ELI:Want to grab dinner at the diner this week? We can go over campaign ideas?

I glare at the text, confused.

ME:Aren’t we running against each other?

I groan, realizing what I just texted. Did I really just ask him if I’m runningagainsthim for grand marshal? Goddammit, this town drives me nuts.

ELI:Sure are but it’ll be more fun if we do it together.

With another roll of my eyes. I drop the phone on the windowsill of the cottage I’m just finishing painting.
