She reached toward the laptop herself, rolling it back to where she thought she saw something.

“Right there,” she said, stabbing a finger at the screen.

“I don’t see anything,” Remo said.

Roe hit the button to brighten the screen, then traced the edge of… something. I just couldn’t say what it was.

“There.”

“It’s a shadow. From that plant.”

“No, it’s not. It’s a woman.”

“A woman?” I asked, squinting.

“Look, this is her ponytail. And that’s her butt. Now look at this.” She fast-forwarded the footage to the next morning.

“And here.”

Therewasa woman.

But it was from the back.

Just a woman exiting a room and waiting for the elevator a few minutes after Domenico left.

“So, there’s a woman staying here,” he said, shrugging.

“I know you’re both guys, so maybe this doesn’t make sense to you. But I don’t know a single woman who would hang out in the shadows of a hallway late at night in a hotel.” At our blank looks, she shook her head. “You could get pulled into any of these rooms and no one would know. So what was she doing there?”

I shared a look with Remo.

“It’s something,” Remo said. “And we could use something. I’ll look into it. Thanks for the food. And the eyes, Monroe.” He offered her a small smile as he got to his feet. “Walk me out?”

“I’ll be right back,” I said as Roe pulled the laptop onto her legs and kept looking through the footage.

“Okay,” she said, giving me a distracted smile.

Remo and I walked into the elevator before he spoke.

“I’m on this now. When she is ready to leave, there’s an employee exit down beside the spa. Let her go out that way. One of my guys will shadow her back to her house. Then to work.”

“What do you need from me?”

“I will text you as soon as I know about the woman’s room. Might need you to sweep it.”

“Got it,” I agreed as the doors opened and he exited.

I made my way back upstairs to find Roe standing there just inside the door with the laptop held out to face me.

“What is it?” I asked.

She clicked play.

It was the night he disappeared, but earlier.

And there she was.

The woman.
