Jack shrugged. “Some money. Figured we didn’t need someone like him holding a grudge. He may have been harmless enough, but I’m sure he has friends.”

“Never thought of that. Guess I’m not cut out for this cloak-and-dagger shit.”

Laughing, Jack said, “You seemed to do the tough guy questioning thing well enough.”

“This thing with Heather almost getting killed has got me freaked out. I need tofind answers.”

“You don’t have to explain it to me. Trying to keep Callie and Jonathan safe for so many years was about the only thing that kept me going. But you keep saying how Heather almost got killed. You were right there in the explosion too, Scott. Don’t forget to watch yourown back here.”

“I won’t. But isn’t that what I haveyou for, cuz?”

They both laughed then got in the truck to head home. At least now he had a place to start in finding the answers to all the crap that had been going down since he and Heather had bought this building. Hopefully once he found them, he could go about setting everything right. Get back into the renovations. He wanted everything back in the right with his relationship with Heather because he knew now that it was something he definitely wishedto go forward.
