“His grandson,” Drew suggested.
“No.” Jack grew hot thinking someone would use Jonathan in any way. None of the guys in the group knew the truth about his son, except Scott.
“I know it’s sucky to involve a kid, but if it’s the guy’s weakness, we should use it.”
“He’smyson, not Cabrini’s grandson.”
The room grew silent as eyes all turned to him.
“Falling for the informant?” Keith said. “That’s not SOP.”
Chris coughed, his face flushed. He hadn’t followed Standard Operating Procedure either as he was now engaged to his own informant. “It happens sometimes.”
Nick cleared his throat. “Guessing Cabrini doesn’t know this.”
“No, and he can’t. Callie would be in danger. But it’s the main reason Scott brought you here I think. Jonathan’s starting to talk a lot more and if we can’t get rid of Cabrini, I need to stay out of their lives.”
“Sounds like the best way to actually get Cabrini out of their lives is to get rid of this guy, permanently.”They all knew what Nick meant.
“He’s got too many guards all over him.” Jack knew the kind of protection the mob boss kept with him.
“I could drive my rig right through his limo.”
“You’d kill the driver too. I don’t want any innocents getting hurt. I was his chauffeur for a while.”
Drew waved his hand toward Nick. “And you’d spend the rest of your life in jail on manslaughter charges.”
“Nah, his rich daddy would get him off, I’m sure,” Scott said.
Nick snorted. “Not sure he’d give me a second thought. He still hasn’t forgiven me for joining the Army and not the family business. But I’m good hanging out in prison. As long as you guys visit me and bring me stuff.”
Jack stood and paced the room. “I appreciate the sacrifice, Nick, but the best bet might be getting inside his home office. Callie found out the combination to his safe.”
“How do you plan on getting inside this fortress?” Chris held up the diagram of Cabrini’s estate. “Seems like this guy has solid security.”
Jack pointed to the blue print. “Cabrini has a secret entrance that goes right into his office. Unfortunately we had an incident a few weeks ago.”
His fist clenched as he remembered having to leave Callie in Victor’s hands. “I used it to get inside but got caught so he knows I’m aware of it. I’m sure he’s got extra guards on it now.”
“I could crash my rig into his house. That’d be a diversion.”
The rest of the guys shook their heads. Nick had always been the reckless one.
“We need some strategy. But I think we need more information first. A little reconnaissance.” Drew grabbed a notepad and scribbled on it. “We need to know times of guard changes, how many security people he’s got inside and out, what places he goes to regularly, and when his estate is most vulnerable.”
“I used to know all that stuff but it was a few years ago. I’m sure he’s changed everything around because of what happened.”
Drew winced. “And all this stuff is totally illegal, you know. We’ll need to figure something out to be able to use any evidence we get.”
“That’s why we should just kill him,” Nick said.
“Yeah, cause that’s real legal, dumb ass.” Keith slapped Nick on the side of the head.
Chris studied the files then shook his head. “I still can’t believe you have a kid. Why didn’t you tell us, Jack? We would have done something long before this.”
“We should have done something earlier regardless.” Drew jotted down more notes. “I’m not sure we realized the intensity of the situation. If we can’t count on each other…”
“We had each other’s backs in Afghanistan, we need to have them now.” Keith reached in the cooler for another beer. “Nothing’s changed. It’s the danger that’s different.” He popped the top and took a swig.
