“We’ll take care of him, Scott. You did the right thing in bringing him here.”
He got to his feet and patted Heather on the shoulder with another thanks. Picking up his coat, he shrugged into it then walked downstairs to say good-bye to his cousin. Callie followed, smiling when she saw Jack reading a story to his son. Jonathan hadn’t wasted any time in making that happen.
“Be good, Jack, and don’t give the ladies a hard time.”
A grumble was all he got in response.
She walked Scott to the door and hugged him. As his embrace tightened, he whispered in her ear, “Take care of him. I know this isn’t fair to you but I appreciate it more than you know. Jack does too.”
“Good luck with your meeting. Maybe you could make it back here and spend Christmas with us. Jonathan and I would love it and I think Jack would like seeing you for the holiday too. And you know Heather would be thrilled to have you here.”
Scott made a face at that comment then headed to his rental car and drove away. He’d said it wasn’t fair for her to watch Jack during her vacation. The thing that wasn’t fair was bringing Jack back into her life for a short time only to have him leave again. But then who said life was fair?
