“Yeah, wouldn’t want to teach you any kinky sex tricks looking like that.” He continued with the cloth wiping the blood off in a tender manner. She gave up control this time and allowed him to take care of her.
“Do you know any kinky sex tricks?” she threw out at him, surprised she could even joke at this time of the morning.
His eyes gleamed with mischief. “Would you want to learn them if I did?”
She glared wishing he didn’t always have a witty comeback to her sarcastic comments. “Not with the wayyoulook right now,” she snapped back, her smile as crooked as his. She took another face cloth, wet it then dabbed at some of the cuts onhisface.
“Thanks for coming to my rescue tonight.” Her voice was low and soft. She hated to be indebted to anyone. For some reason it didn’t seem as bad when it was Chris. He didn’t want anything more than information on Moreno. Giving him that would benefit both of them.
“It’s what I do.” His voice was as soft as hers, all joking gone. His gaze roamed her face. She looked awful but his eyes said otherwise.
Meg paused the cloth near his lips as he spoke. They were such beautiful lips. Kissing them the past weeks had been heavenly. Leaning forward she touched her lips to them now. She didn’t have to. No one was around to see. But she wanted to. Wanted to feel them without it being a show for someone else.
He slid in between her legs getting closer to her as his lips moved over hers. Perfect. Barely more than a whisper yet sensual and enticing. She placed her hands on his shoulders then ran her fingers over his neck and into his hair. The kiss was everything it should be.
It didn’t last long enough though as he winced. He eased back taking the cloth from her. “Think I might need some ice for this lip.” He helped her off the counter. “You should put some on that nose. Come on.”
Reluctantly she followed wishing they could forget about this case. Why couldn’t it be over? She needed it to be over so she could get her life back. It would be great if she could meet a man, fall in love, start a life with him. Maybe a man like Chris. Confusion warred inside her. It always did when he was nearby.
“I don’t think the nose is too bad,” she informed him from the bedroom doorway. He was pulling ice from the freezer. “I’m going to get in bed. I’m exhausted. Thanks again for helping me. I’m sorry you got hurt.”
Her heart picked up as he moved near. “It’s all part of the job, sweetie, don’t even worry about it. I’ve had way worse.”
She silently nodded then turned away with a “Good night.”
“Good night,” floated after her then she quickly readied for bed. As she lay there dread settled over her. Chris could have been killed. Sonny and Gunther were hardly lightweights. And now Moreno thought she was learning kinky sex tricks. Wouldn’t he be surprised when he was arrested long before he could test them out with her?
Her eyes fluttered, sleep coaxing her near. Chrishadtaught her something though. He’d taught her to trust again.
Chapter 9
“Katie, I’d like to see you in here for a minute.”
The voice sent chills down her spine. She turned from the locker room doorway to see Moreno standing outside the back room where he held his poker games. Terror scuttled along her nerve endings and tremors radiated from her stomach outward. Was she going to pay for Chris beating up Sonny and Gunther? Moreno’s reaction had been too calm.
“Of course, Mr. Moreno.” She tried to keep her voice steady but it quivered all the same. She followed him inside the room but kept the door open. No luck. He closed it behind her and leaned back against it. Now her body was in full defense mode.
“I am curious about your Christopher Martin. He is an interesting man. His name is too general to do a detailed search and he has some unusual skills for what he appears to be.”
She swallowed hard, her jaw clenched, trying not to fall on her knees and beg for his forgiveness. Had he found out Chris was a federal agent? Did he suspect?
“I don’t know all that much about him except that he’s here on business. And he treats me real nice.” She made sure to add innocent and stupid to her tone of voice. It usually worked in getting Moreno to overlook her.
“I am sure he does, my dear. You are an extremely sweet girl. Everyone should have an opportunity to treat you nice. But I am wondering if you could perhaps find outmore.”
She oozed confusion and dumb blonde. “More what, Mr. Moreno?”
“More information, Katie.” His eyes grew intense.
Tone down the stupid, he’s getting pissed.“You want to know more about Chris? Sure, I can ask him anything you want.”
Moreno’s eyes narrowed and his lips pursed. “No, dear, I don’t think you understand. I wish to have more information about your young man without his knowledge. You see, if he’s in the right field and knows the right people perhaps we could do business. But I don’t wish to get his hopes up that this will happen.”
She smiled shyly, relieved he didn’t seem to suspect Chris worked for the law. “How do I get information without asking him, Mr. Moreno?” Let him think she honestly didn’t have a clue.
She shouldn’t have acted quite so dim because he moved closer and ran his hand down her arm making her stomach churn.
“I have seen him on his phone often, discussing business I assume. You could look on that phone and perhaps get me the numbers of the places he calls, or the numbers that call him. They would be very useful in gathering information on him.”
