His T-shirt hanging off a chair next to the bed would make a perfect dress. I stood up, and my feet hit another silky soft carpet that was sitting under the bed and over the polished wooden floors. Whoever designed the apartment had a serious thing for comfy rugs. Not that I was complaining since I currently reaped the benefits.
I pulled the shirt on and made my way through the open door to the empty bathroom. I’d been hoping to find Gunner in the tiled monstrosity, but the room was as quiet as the bedroom.
I gaped at the waterfall shower that was big enough to fit ten people. I couldn’t wait to test it out. But first I had to take care of business and then find the broody giant who’d left me in his bed without so much as a note.
Padding through the long hallway and to the kitchen, there was still no sign of anyone but me being in the apartment. Gunner’s office door was open, showing another empty room.
My eyes comically bugged out of my head when I noticed the time on the oven. It was almost ten in the morning. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d slept in this late.
The coffee machine drew me closer, and I inhaled the sweet, sweet scent of freshly brewed coffee. The pot was still hot, so Gunner couldn’t have left that long ago.
After finishing my cup in record time, I took a quick shower, marveling at the showerheads that came out of the side, covering my body in beautifully hot water. After I got dressed in jeans and a sweater, I pulled on my sneakers and left the apartment.
I half expected the elevator to refuse me entry, but the doors silently slid open when I pressed the button. I stepped into the chrome interior and pushed the number for the floor that housed Locked Security.
The doors closed, and I rocked back and forth on my feet, eager to see where Gunner spent the majority of his time.
A ping announced my arrival, and I got the first glimpse of the Locked Security offices when I stepped out into a lobby.
Two people were seated behind a long desk covering the whole left side of the space. A few chairs and a table sat off to the right, and there was a door at the end of the room, opposite the elevator.
The woman closest to me greeted me with a professional smile. Her raven hair was tied into a bun at the nape of her neck, and her dark-red lipstick was flawless, as was the rest of her perfectly made-up face.
“Hi, hello.” My greeting was halting, my voice low. I took a few tentative steps closer, a wobbly smile on my face. Maybe coming down here unannounced had been a bad idea.
“Hello, you must be Freya. I’m Isla. You’re even prettier than Gunner described.” Her smile warmed, and my cheeks heated. “He’s in a meeting at the moment, but feel free to wait in his office. It’s the corner room with the blue door at the other end of the hall. You can‘t miss it. Help yourself to anything in the break room.”
I nodded. “Thank you.”
“Yell if you need anything. My extension is 3232.”
I looked back at her. “Will do.”
Gunner’s office really was easy to find, and after walking past curious but friendly faces, I disappeared behind the safety of his frosted glass walls.
Not wanting to snoop, I sat down on a leather couch next to an armchair set around a glass table. Two long bookshelves covered the left and right walls from top to bottom. I couldn't resist for more than thirty seconds before I got up again.
Most of the books were on strategy, but he also had a lot of biographies sprinkled throughout. I stopped at the trophies and medals that sat behind a glass door. Their names meant nothing to me, but the fact that he’d gotten them in the first place was impressive.
“They’re from my time in the navy.”
I spun around to face Gunner, drinking him in. He looked good in the white shirt he wore, the top two buttons undone. His black slacks added to his corporate look, and I found my eyes wandering over his form.
Too bad his office didn’t have real walls, because as much as I liked what he was wearing, I knew I’d like taking it off more.
His long strides ate up the distance between us, and he pulled me into him and took my mouth in a deep but short kiss. “You sleep okay?”
I twined my hands into his hair, kissing his chest. “Always do when you’re there.”
“Good.” He hugged me to his chest before dropping his arms and stepping back. “Something unexpected came up last night. I have to work for a few hours, but feel free to hang out here or visit your family.”
I chewed my bottom lip, knowing I wanted to stay with him. “I’ll see them on Sunday for dinner anyway. We’re still on for that, right?”
“Of course.” He winked at me. “Wouldn't miss it for the world.”
I snorted at his obvious embellishment. Nobody but an Olysses looked forward to dinner with my family. “Okay with you if I just hang out here in the meantime?”
He kissed my cheek. “I’d love that.”
