“And she asked me if I’d come back to work until she found you another bodyguard.”
Happiness, blistering and beautiful, ripped through me. “What did you say?” I tilted up my chin so he could kiss me if he wanted to.
He did.
It was never just a kiss from Rafe, though. It was a sweeping wave, a rush that lifted me from my feet. It was a promise of all the things to come, of the other places he’d visit with his teeth and lips and tongue.
“I said I’d think about it.”
I slapped both palms against his chest. “You’dthinkabout it?”
He laughed, and I realized it was the first time I’d ever heard him do so. “I’m kidding, Victoria. I said yes.” He brushed the hair from my face. “Of course I said yes.”
“What happens after that?”
“I don’t know. Guess we’ll take it one day at a time.”
And at that, he picked me up and carried me inside my apartment, stepping over the cat and laying me on the couch and undressing me with slow, perfect precision until all I could think about was the world spinning above me and my skin burning under his touch.
I’d done it. I’d finished the job and gotten the guy and kept most of my sanity in the process.
I wasn’t a failure after all.
I was, with Rafe, a perfect success.
