Her car was already parked when I pulled up in front of the apartment building. There was no sight of Willa, but no surprise there.
I used my key to get upstairs and stopped when I walked past Nora’s door. I kept babysitting for her throughout the week, and thankfully she had finally told Mason that he didn’t have to come as well. Not that he would have, seeing as he was doing his best to avoid me.
Willa’s door was open and I pushed through it, closing it behind me. Her apartment was a mess, and she hadn’t been back for more than a day.
“You feel like a romcom or something more violent?” she asked, scrolling through the options.
“Definitely more in the mood for violence. Something bloody if you have it.”
“Of course, I do. This is the age of pay-per-view. I have whatever your broken little heart desires. You can wallow in here for days and not run out of anything to watch. I’ll order the pizza now. Want ice cream before or after?” she asked.
“Both,” I answered and opened the freezer door.
A mountain of frozen meals came flying out, hitting me in the head and chest. “What the fuck,” I yelped in surprise and blinked at the now empty freezer.
I picked up a carton of ice cream that had tumbled out as well and put the rest back inside the freezer. The meals were all for weight loss, and I frowned. Why the hell would Willa want to lose weight?
“What’s with all the frozen meals, Wills?”
She went red and waved me off. “Those are nothing. Nothing at all. I just thought I’d try something new.”
Again with the bullshit answers. She was hiding something from me and I wasn’t going to leave until she told me what was going on. Her need to see Jameson would eventually be so great that I could get all her secrets out of her. I’d give it three hours of captivity and she would cry uncle. I cracked my knuckles, ready to take her down.
“Can I take a photo with your phone?” I asked, knowing I had to be strategic about it.
“Sure,” the naïve little lamb said and handed it over. I put it in my pocket and went to the door, locking it.
“Hey, I thought you wanted to take a photo.”
“I don’t. Just needed your phone.”
She put her hands on her hips and glared at me. “What’s going on?”
“Nope,” I said and put up my hand. “That’s my line. And you are going to tell me what you’re hiding from me.”
She looked at the floor. “I’m not hiding anything.”
“Really, Wills? Because I know for a fact that you are. You are the shittiest liar in the history of lying and I know all your tells.”
“I don’t have any tells.”
I sighed and opened the ice cream container. “Look, this can be over quickly or we can drag it out. The end result will be the same. Just tell me and we can get on with our lives.”
I dipped the spoon in the ice cream and sighed when the first bite hit my tongue.
Willa stepped forward, but I hugged the ice cream container to my chest. “No dessert for you until you spill the beans.”
Her lower lip popped out and she gave me her best puppy dog eyes. I shook my head at her amateur move.
“Not gonna work on me, missy. I’m not whipped like Jameson.”
“Fine. If you want to know, then I’ll tell you.”
I raised a brow, waiting for her to continue. She took it as enough of an invitation and did.
“Jameson asked me to marry him. We’re engaged. I’m dressed up because I was doing a makeup and hair trial today. I’m trying to lose a few pounds, so I can fit into my mom’s wedding dress. There it is. Now are you happy?”
I dropped the spoon and barely caught the ice cream container that started to slip out of my hands.
