It jarred her, hearing him call her by her twin’s name. And what did he mean, there wasn’t time? What the hell was going on here?
Another car tried to turn onto the mountain pass, but quickly retreated when Razor flashed his dark glare and long fangs at the driver. They were starting to draw attention from other passing vehicles now. Maybe that was a good thing. Maybe stalling the Breed male long enough to alert half the town to his presence was the best way to keep him off the mountain and away from Laurel’s cabin.
“I need you to come with me now, Laurel. It’s not safe for you here anymore.”
His hand came to rest on Willow’s forearm and her heart leapt into her throat. His touch seemed electric, the contact zinging through her bloodstream hot and unsettlingly intimate.
She yanked out of his reach. “Keep your hands off me. I’m not going anywhere with you.”
Okay, so attempting to stall him was not such a good idea. Escape seemed her best option.
Willow tried frantically to put the Jeep into gear again, but the damn thing wouldn’t budge out of neutral. Razor was still holding her there with his impossible strength and the power of his Breed mind.
She knew all too well that he could do much worse if he wanted to.
So . . . why wasn’t he?
Was he waiting to take her to a second location before he killed her? Or was he a bounty hunter who’d come to do someone else’s dirty work? Did Laurel have some kind of price on her head?
Either way, this vampire had to be lying about knowing Theo Collier. According to Laurel, Theo was a bookish, soft-spoken man from a tiny farm community in Quebec. He’d been a shy, serious student all through college where he and Laurel had met. After graduation, they both had gone straight to work for the same research institute in Montreal. How would an introverted human like Theo ever have come into contact with a dangerous looking Breed male like Razor?
Willow’s confusion deepened, along with her suspicions.
“If what you’re saying is true, then get Theo on the phone right now. Let me speak to him.”
A growled curse slipped past those deadly fangs and far-too-supple lips. “You can talk to him after I get you somewhere safe. The longer we delay, the more danger you’re in, Laurel. I can’t let them see that you’re unharmed.”
Something about the way he said that made her blood freeze in her veins. The way his cryptic warning seemed to imply something awful had already happened made the fine hairs at her nape stand on end.
“What are you talking about? Who’sthem?”
“I don’t know, but I mean to find out.”
Was he really telling her the truth? As much as she wanted to doubt him, the raw sincerity in his bleak gaze took her breath away. She didn’t like the feeling of dread that was swamping her now. The feeling that the earth was about to open up and swallow her.
“Do you really know Theo?”
A grave nod. “We met when we were boys.”
Willow swallowed. “And he sent you here . . . why?”
“Because he fears for your life, and he knows I’m uniquely suited to this job. And because I made him a promise a long time ago.”
“What kind of promise?”
“It doesn’t matter right now. All that does matter is that I bring you somewhere safe.”
“Safe from what?” Willow nearly whispered. “Safe from who?”
Razor stared at her, a tendon working in his brutal jaw. “From whoever burned down your cabin a few hours ago.”
CHAPTER 3
If Razor had his doubts that the woman he’d been watching for the past few months could have somehow escaped the attack on her cabin, those doubts vanished as he stood outside her Jeep in the twilight.
He would know her face anywhere. Her wide green eyes, the soft cut of her cheeks and jaw, those pale freckles that splashed over the bridge of her slightly upturned nose. Her pouty lips that made everything male in him clench with desire every time he saw her on his surveillance feed.
Fuck.
