Her eyes narrow. “What makes you think there’s more of those things?”

“Because I’ve killed four, and they travel in packs of ten, sometimes twenty.” I’m going to be spending the next few days doing nothing but hunting. I usually catch creatures before they reach the city, but I’d been helping Oran with a big job near the breach that he guards.

I’m beginning to wonder if it wasn’t a distraction. But the monsters aren’t that smart…or they never used to be.

“They could hurt others,” she says.

“They might, but they want fae blood and they found you.” And I’m leaving a trail of blood that every monster in a two-mile radius will be able to sniff out and follow.

I swear I hear claws on the pavement. If I shoot with so many cops around, they’ll be on me in a heartbeat and I don’t want to be buying the next round of drinks for the other fae warriors protecting the human realm because I fucked up and had to be bailed out.

“What do you want in return?”

“Nothing.” Another kiss, maybe more as along as she isn’t holding anything pointy. “Maybe a bandage.”

She stands. “I can do better than that.”
