Something in the way Alex looked at her as he said the words made her skin tingle. His chocolate-brown eyes swirled with heat, and she caught her breath. In her super high heels, he’d still been quite a bit taller than she was. With her heels off, he towered over her.
Lacey tried to think of something witty to say, but for some reason, her mind seemed to have completely shut down. Stringing together more than a word or two—much less something clever—was impossible. Luckily, when Alex reached out to take her hand and tug her closer, her instincts took over for her misfiring head, and her hands lifted to grasp his shoulders.
A moment later, Alex lowered his head to kiss her. Her lips parted in anticipation, and she melted against him as his warm mouth covered hers. She moaned loudly as his tongue found hers. At least this time, she had good cause for making noises like that. Alex tasted scrumptious.
She slipped one hand up to his short, dark hair, tucking her fingers in deep and yanking him closer, urging him to kiss her harder. But he refused, instead continuing his slow, careful, teasing exploration. Every once in a while, he pulled away to trace his lips along her jawline and make her whole body shiver, but mostly he teased her with his delectable kisses.
She slipped her tongue into his mouth to play with his, trembling as hers glided across sharp teeth. She was going to have to be careful kissing him—a girl could cut herself on those babies.
Lacey rarely took part in casual flings. In fact, she hadn’t done it since early on in college. She had to admit, she was definitely thinking about it now. The truth was, with just a few kisses, Alex had her more excited than she could ever remember being. She couldn’t imagine what it would be like if they were naked and rolling around in each other’s arms. She might just spontaneously combust.
And with her sister out, there would never be a better time.
She leaned into Alex, pressing her breasts against the hard, muscular planes of his chest as she felt something firm and insistent poking her in the stomach. Nice to know she wasn’t the only one aroused.
She was sliding her hand down his chest to see just how aroused Alex really was when he broke their kiss with a soft growl and took a step back.
“It’s getting late, and I’m sure you have to get up early tomorrow for work.” His eyes smoldered so much, they nearly glowed from the heat. “I should be going.”
Lacey thought for sure he had to be kidding, but when she slipped her hand down to one of his belt loops to tug him close again, he held firm. He tipped his head down for another quick kiss, then just as her fingers and knees went weak, he broke away and started for the door.
She blinked. “That’s it? You’re just going to get me all hot and bothered, then leave?”
Alex turned to face her, his mouth curving into a sexy smile as he continued backing toward the door. “We could always pick this up where we left off, but only if you were willing to go out on a second date. I wouldn’t want you thinking I was trying to force you into a relationship or anything.”
He was using her own words against her, dang him. She’d told him she wasn’t looking for a relationship and that a second date probably wasn’t in the cards. He’d taken her on the best first date of her life, then gotten her as turned on as a lightbulb just to make sure she’d definitely be coming back for more. He was so bad.
Lacey returned his smile. “You’re resorting to sexual arousal to blackmail me into another date?”
He stopped as he reached the door. “A desperate man does what he has to.”
She lifted a brow. “I make you that desperate?”
“I guess it will take another date—or two—for you to find that out.”
That dangerous smile of his flashed across his face again before he turned and walked out.
She followed after him, catching a glimpse of his powerful form just before the door closed behind him. She looked out the peephole, hoping he’d glance back. He didn’t.
Sighing, she flipped the lock, then leaned back against the door. Her whole body was tingling like she’d had an allover body massage, and the pulse between her legs told her she was more aroused than she’d ever been in her life. All from a kiss.
From where he was seated on the couch, Leo lifted his head and looked at her.
“Leo, I think your human is in deep trouble,” she said.
Chapter 6
“They make a good couple, don’t they?” Remy said from beside Alex. “I’ve always thought that Brooks would fit best with a rough-and-tumble type of woman, and a veteran narcotics cop like Vaughn definitely fills the bill. I can see her holding him at gunpoint, demanding he get naked.”
On the other side of the narcotics briefing room, Brooks turned and flashed them a grin, clearly hearing what Remy had just said. That, of course, had been Remy’s intention all along.
Alex and Remy, along with Max and Brooks, had been called over to the narcotics division office for a task force briefing. Brooks had made a beeline for Vaughn the moment they walked in, and if the big smile on her face was any indication, the woman must have decided she had a thing for big, muscular men who tackled cars for fun.
“You think she’s The One for him?” Alex asked, trying to picture the huge dark-skinned alpha werewolf with the attractive but rough-around-the-edges narcotics officer.
Remy shrugged. “Maybe, but if not, there’s nothing wrong with her being The-One-for-Right-Now. Enough about Brooks and who he might end up with. How’d the date with Lacey go last night? Everything you hoped and expected?”
