“I love you, Sammy,” she said.
“I love you, I love you both.”
We untangled, and Ben wiped his cheek. “Love us forever then, yeah?”
Forever.
CHAPTER FORTY-SIX
Lukas
“What all does it entail?”Ben queried. After the three of them cried for a while, they agreed to stay the night. Currently, we were in the dining room the following morning.
“To turn him, I assume is what you’re asking?” I sat with just a cup of coffee while the three of them had plates filled with waffles, eggs, and bacon.
“Yeah.”
Sam and I hadn’t talked about that yet, and while I would have liked to tell him about this privately, his expression told me he needed to know now.
“It’s not like in the books. I don’t bite him, he will need to ingest my blood, but it will be far more civilized than you likely think. There are no velvet-walled rooms and satin sheets, or bats flying about.”
Natalie chuckled. “Humans have done you dirty, Lukas.”
I smirked. “Humans are creative. Vampires were once humans, remember that. And while I think a lot of the lore isridiculous, we’ve never thought to dispute it. Thinking we are all you say we are gave us the ability to live amongst you.”
“True.” Ben shoveled eggs into his mouth.
“So, how do you turn Sammy here into a vamp?” Natalie winked at Sam.
“It’s not complicated. When I turned, I was mortally wounded. Literally on my deathbed. My sire turned me, and I don’t remember it. But he told me he cut his wrist and dripped his blood directly into my wound. As I gained strength, I drank his blood. While I turned immediately, I had to be with him and only him for one moon cycle.”
“Why one moon cycle?” Ben asked.
“Bloodlust is real, but it’s not like the books and movies. If a fledgling is locked away with just their sire for one moon cycle, the blood lust is sated. I drank only on his blood, and it has capabilities. It’s why you’re not allowed to sire unless you’ve been turned longer than one hundred years.”
“I don’t get it, but okay.” Natalie adjusted her glasses. “So Sammy stays hidden away for a month and then walks out of here and won’t want to drink us dry?”
“Nat,” Sam hissed.
I laughed. “It’s a valid question. He won’t want to kill anyone or drink from them. Blood will always be provided for Sam. He will never want or crave.”
“It’s so civilized.” Ben huffed. “I pictured having to tie Sam down and threaten him with crosses.”
“Wow, Ben, thanks.”
“When are you both thinking of doing this?” Natalie looked from me to Sam.
“Oh, um…” Sam turned to me. “I don’t know.”
“Sam will be able to live here for a while. After a certain period of time when he no longer is aging, we will have to move.” I held my hands up when they all began protesting. “I knowhow much the two of you mean to Sam. This whole situation isn’t typical. I wasn’t even really allowed to tell either of you, but we do have humans in our employ. Winston, for one. There are families who know.”
“Okay, but what does that have to do with you leaving?” Natalie wondered.
“It means, while we will have to go, we will never be too far from you and your family. Any time you want to see Sam, I will make it happen. In a month’s time, he will walk into Cone Creations healthy as, well, a vampire.”
“Won’t the doctors be all, what the hell?” Ben made a good point.
“It is a concern, but that’s where the month comes in handy. We will tell everyone I took Sam overseas to seek a second opinion, and he will be cured. Doctors will ask, and the council will be ready.”
