I nodded. “Am I annoying you?”

“Always,” he said, but that cruel edge he normally had wasn’t there, so I continued to walk with him.

We reached the post office, and he held the door open for me, which made me swoon a little bit. We got up to the counter, and he handed Mallory a slip of paper.

“I was told my package was undeliverable and to come get it here.”

I sighed. “Hey, Mallory. How are Keith and the kids?”

She smiled at me. “Great, Sam. Cara lost a tooth the other day.”

“Hell, yeah! Money time.”

“Excuse me,” Lukas interrupted, and Mallory’s happiness dimmed as she turned to him. “My package? Which, I wonder…why couldn’t anyone here have attempted to deliver it after the storm?”

Mallory snapped her gum and blinked slowly. “Policy.”

“Pfft. Policy, that’s a lie.”

I placed a hand on Lukas’s arm before Mallory went and lit his mail on fire. “Stop talking, Lukas.” I grinned at Mallory. “Would you be an angel and get this grumpy man his package, before his ego self-destructs?”

She chuckled. “Anything for you, sugar.”

When she was gone Lukas gritted his teeth. “She’s completely unprofessional.”

“And you’re rude. Together you’d make amazingly horrific children.”

He huffed but didn’t respond. Mallory brought his package out. He signed and without another word, Lukas stormed out.

“See ya, Mal. Say hi to the fam for me.” I hurried after Lukas, hoping he didn’t sprint back to the docks.

Lukas had only made it a few feet, but I caught up to him. “Where to now?”

“I’m going home.”

“Boring.” I elbowed him lightly, and…wow, the man was solid. “How about dinner?”

“I ate already.”

“A movie?”

He stopped and faced me. “Do you not have friends, a boyfriend or girlfriend?”

I laughed. “I spent the afternoon with my friends, and the love of my life clearly got stuck in a condom, hence me being single.”

He was desperately trying to hold in his laughter, and it always felt like a gift to make this man smile.

“I have to get this package home; it’s quite bulky.”

“Oh, yeah, sure.” I hadn’t thought of that.

He took two steps and stopped again. When he spun and faced me, there was a confused expression on his face.

“If you’d like to join me, we can watch a movie at my place.”

My eyes widened. “It’s a date!” I raced toward the dock, cackling as Lukas yelled, “It’s not a date!”
