He just pats my shoulder before calling out, “Hey, Noah! Come here for a second!”
Noah jogs towards us with a happy expression. “What’s up? Not enough beer in the fridge?”
“Someone is spreading lies.” Connor directs his gaze over to where Kristen is shimmying around the livingroom, talking a mile a minute about how it would be a great dance floor for parties.
Noah looks back at me in a panic. “Hey. What did she say?”
A blush creeps across my cheeks. “It’s nothing, I’m just overthinking things.”
“Audrey …”
I exhale, throwing my hands up in the air. “That the two of you have spent a lot of time together.” My voice catches.
“Connor, can you bring the beers to the guys and give us a second?” Noah asks softly before turning to look at me. “What else did she say?”
I swallow. “That she saw the house already.”
Noah tilts his head back, letting out a frustrated sigh. “She only saw the listing online. The only reason she even saw that was because I was showing Adam and Daisy and she walked into the room. She basically pulled my phone out of my hand.”
I lean back against the countertop with a frown. I don’t like how assertive she is, it sits weird with me.
“Auddie, baby. I’ve been trying to avoid her like the plague. She's going to be around her brother all season, so I don’t want to be rude to her, but no matter what she says or does, you and I are all that matters. Okay?”
I nod my head, looking down at the white marble tile betweenus. “Okay.”
“Good girl.”
My eyes snap up to Noah’s, who looks conflicted for half a second before smirking. “Adding that to the list.”
My laughter is loud, drawing the attention of everyone in the room.
“What’s so funny over there?” Kristen asks as everyone moves towards us.
Noah turns to face the others, and without missing a beat he replies, “Just giving my girl trouble, now let’s get to work!”
And just like that Kristen’s eyes shoot daggers at me.
I wasn't planning to mark my territory like a possessive girlfriend, but knowing Noah is so quick to make it known gives me hope that maybe she’ll back off a bit.
Or not.
“Your girl?” She basically scoffs.
“Kristen, good grief. Back off,” Adam interjects in annoyance.
“She’s your girlfriend?”
Noah places a protective arm around my shoulder. “Yeah.”
I see the anger rising in both Noah and Connor so I interject, “Kristen, can we chat for a moment? Outside?”
She lets out a huff before going out the back door.
Connor wrangles the other guys away to grab more boxes while Noah gives me a nervous look.
“I’ll be okay. Don’t worry,No.”
“Shout if you need me. I’m not afraid to break down the door.”
