“Good for you,” she fires back.
No love lost there, but that’s all Vin’s fault. He can’t stop messing with her, like he does most women he’s not trying to fuck.
“Assault! You saw it!” Vin points at Matti. “Matti, keep your woman in check! She’s violent!”
“She is violent. You better watch your ass,” Matti deadpans, his attention on his phone.
“What if I’d rather watchherass,” Vin says, a huge grin on his face as he waits for Matti’s reaction.
I lean back, toying with my phone. When it buzzes, I snap to attention. It’s a text but not from Gi. It’s from an unknown number.
I have information
about Giovanna’s
kidnapping. Need
in-person meet.
Stand by for time
and location.
“Fuck yeah,” I mutter, and immediately respond with a confirmation.
This feels like a gift from the gods. Anonymous or not, it’s movement, and I can’t just keep sitting here waiting for something to materialize.
But first, I need to see Gi. I’m not leaving her alone another minute.
I stand up and head for the door, almost running Siena over.
“Sorry, Siena.” I glance down at the tray she’s holding and realize this must be the pastine she was talking about. “Shit, thank you for going to the trouble, but I really have to—”
“It’s okay,” she says. “You’re fine. Be safe.”
I drop a quick kiss on the top of her head and head to the door.
“Jesus, no goodbye? Tommy?” Vin yells after me.
Fuck him. This isn’t a meeting. It’s a bullshit session, and I’ve got shit to do.
“Tommy, you good?” Matti calls out.
“I’ll let you know,” I yell back, closing the door behind me.
My pulse is hammering. I don’t know who that message came from or where it’s leading, but for the first time in weeks, I feel like I might be getting somewhere.
40
Giovanna
My phone vibrates across the coffee table, knocking into a half-empty water bottle. I’ve been pacing the living room for what feels like forever, checking my phone every few minutes, waiting for Tommy to text.
When I see my mother’s name light up the screen, I pause.
I almost let it go to voicemail. I don’t have the energy for her tonight, but then I sigh and swipe to answer.
“Hey, Mom.”
