These detectives have no idea who they are going up against. Kellan McGuire is one of the top criminal defense attorneys in the country. He also happens to be a member of the McGuire clan, where his father, Dylan, is the head of the Scottish mob in America. Kellan straddles both sides of the law and does a hell of a job while doing it. He has an acquittal rate of ninety-eightpercent. And he’ll make sure that I won’t be included in those two percent of convictions.

“Do you know Pierre Gaultier?” Detective Regan asks.

“As I’ve told you before, I don’t recognize that name.”

“A vehicle was seen pulling out of an alley behind The Black Star Bar and Grill the night that he went missing.”

“I’m sure a lot of people were in that area, detective,” Kellan says. “Get to the point.”

“The point is that vehicle can be linked to your client.” Detective Regan leans his forearms on the table. “Can you tell me about that, Mr. Larsson?”

I look at Kellan, and he nods his head. “I’m not sure, Detectives, but I can get that information to you. I’ve recently visited Chicago and had a few meetings. It is possible I had a meeting there or in the area. I’ll have my assistant get my itinerary for those meetings to you as soon as possible.”

Detective Logan nods as he records my answers on a notepad.

“Do you know Arabelle Williamson?” Detective Regan asks.

“I do. She’s my fiancée. Why are you asking?”

“Your fiancée?” Detective Regan asks. “Since when?”

“How does that help with your investigation, gentlemen?” Kellan asks. “Mr. Larsson has stated that she’s his fiancée. Please move on to the next question. We have things to do.”

“We’re just trying to establish a timeline of events, Mr. McGuire,” Detective Regan says.

“And what does that timeline of events have to do with my client’s engagement?” Kellan asks.

“Because your fiancée was on a date with Pierre Gaultier before he went missing, Mr. Larsson. Do you know anything about that?” Detective Logan asks.

“I don’t keep up with men my fiancée has dated in the past just as she doesn’t keep track of women I’ve dated in the past, gentlemen.”

Kellan looks at his watch. “Mr. Larsson can answer one more question, gentlemen.”

“Did you have anything to do with the disappearance or murder of Pierre Gaultier?”

“Gentlemen, as stated before, I have no idea who this man is. And I’m sure my fiancée knows nothing about his death or disappearance either.”

“If you need any more information from Mr. Larsson or his fiancée, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me,” Kellan says as he stands.

“I don’t believe you’re telling me the truth, Mr. Larsson,” Detective Regan says.

“Your belief has no bearing on the truth, Detective,” Kellan says. “If you have proof of his involvement, arrest him.”

When neither man makes a move to put me in handcuffs, I stand, then button my suit blazer, and follow Kellan out of the office. When we step outside the precinct, Kellan looks at me with his brow arched. “Fiancée?”

“Yes, I’m getting married.”

“And when did this happen?”

I smile. “It was a last-minute thing.”

“And what does this woman have to do with this case?”

“He tried to rape her, so he was dealt with,” I say, shrugging.

I don’t hide anything from Kellan. I make sure he knows everything so he can do his job to the best of his ability. He has no illusions about the man that I am. As long as he gets paid, he doesn’t worry about the morality part.

“Enough said. How are you going to handle this because I know we aren’t taking this to trial.”
