“Well, we sort of need a way to come back, so without you, we’ll be lost in some sort of black hole. I would say that’s a pretty big deal.” Hunter smiled. “Do you think your archives might have something about this Slayer creature? Any information we can find about it would be helpful.”
“The Great Sage might have some information. I’ll ask him when we get back. Also, Levi might know, too.” Xander grabbed a stick off the ground and tossed it casually, watching it as it skipped off the ground a couple of times before it settled in one spot.
“Do you think Reiya will tell Lee about all this?” Hunter asked.
Xander chuckled. “He already knows something’s up. He’s lived for an eternity. We aren’t going to simply outwit him. She isn’t going to have a choice. Plus, she can’t keep secrets very well.”
Hunter laughed. “Reiya is horrible at it.”
“What am I horrible at?” Reiya asked, running up behind them.
“Keeping secrets.” Hunter turned and smiled widely at her.
“I can’t help it if my heart is just too sweet and pure,” Reiya said as she stepped between Hunter and Xander.
“Ha! That isn’t it. You just don’t have a poker face at all,” Hunter teased with a laugh.
“Are you both okay?” Reiya looked at Xander. “You seem upset.”
Xander let out an airy laugh. “Just a bit, Reiya.”
“So … who’s going to tell me the big secret you three have?” Lee asked, standing in front of them on the path.
“Hey! How did you get in front of us? Tsk … damn deities.” Hunter tipped his head and smirked at Reiya
Reiya sighed with a frown. “I am horrible at secrets.”
CHAPTER SIXTY-THREE
“Ithink we may need to walk farther out to discuss this.” Reiya looked around. She didn’t see anyone, but it would be best to be cautious. “Let’s use the soundproof office dad made.” Reiya pointed in the distance to a gray vinyl sided building.
“That’s actually a good idea. I probably need to start using it more.” Hunter chuckled as he rubbed his hand through his hair.
Lee held his hand out to Reiya, who walked into his side. “It isn’t just you who isn’t good with secrets, my fairy.” Lee looked over at Hunter and Xander with a chuckle.
“What did we do?” Hunter asked as he opened the office door.
Lee laughed quietly. “Let’s just say I had a good hunch.”
Hunter closed the door behind them and looked at Xander. “You already guessed he knew anyway.”
“Yeah. It really is pointless to hide things from him. Plus, he might have information.” Xander looked at Reiya, who was looking at Lee as she bit her inner bottom lip.
“Okay. Let’s hear it.” Lee looked at Reiya, waiting for her to start talking.
“Well, first, let me start by saying there isn’t anything you can do about this. No matter what, it has to happen. Avoidance isn’t an option.”
Lee growled. “I hate conversations that start out like that.”
“There is no choice here.” Reiya looked at Xander and Hunter. “And if we don’t do this, Kali, the dark priestess, will kill Freja.”
Lee rubbed his hand over his face. “Please just continue with everything so I can understand what’s going on.”
“Okay, so … I guess Selene’s partner, Kali’s brother Endymion, is trapped in some sort of black hole. The reason Selene saved the Gemini souls is because we are the only ones who can enter the black hole and still manage to escape. However, you have to have fairy blood in order to enter.” She listened to the low snarl that escaped Lee’s throat. “Xander will be the beacon, while Hunter and I enter the black hole to bring back Endymion. Obviously, this is a first-time thing, so there are no guarantees. Also, there is a chance we could run into something called the Slayer while we’re in there. And that is the general idea of it. Xander, Hunter, and I are supposed to do this after the war against the demons.”
Lee muttered profanities under his breath, including cursing the Moon Goddess. Then he leaned against the wall, closed his eyes, and stood there, deathly quiet.
Reiya turned her gaze to Hunter, then Xander. This was an unexpected reaction from him. She walked up to him hesitantly, afraid he might be upset with her. She knew he could sense her presence near him, but he continued to remain still. She could feel the anxiety building up inside her. Her chest tightened, and her breathing felt strained. She really couldn’t do anything about it. One, she owed it to the Moon Goddess. And two, she would not allow Freja to be killed.
