“Ain’t nobody as skinny as Jase, Boug. He’s like a birdman.”
“I know. Always has been. Worse now.” Beau put a hand on the small of his back.
“Uh…” His eyelids went heavy. Oh. That felt good.
“Mmmhmm. You’re tight.”
“A little.” It was more fun when Beau said that in the bed.
Beau gave him a glance, eyes bright, cheeks hot. Whoa. Someone else was thinking naughty. Sam sorta stared, his heart going bam, bam, bam. “We could skip lunch.”
“We could. We could…nap.” He liked naps.
“Y’all! Lunch!” Missy’s head popped around the corner.
Shit. Beau jumped as if someone had bit him, because Janey was trundling over to grab their arms.
“Be right there.” Fuck a doodle.
“Hey, honey. You have a good morning?” Beau gave him a rueful grin before letting Janey drag him off.
This was why they needed to go home. Home to their house. With doors and locks.
Janey chattered, Missy grinned and waggled a finger at him, and he wanted to scream a little.
He rolled his eyes and tried hard not to sigh. He couldn’t complain none. He just wanted to get home—Jase was riding blind.
Andy gave him a look of complete understanding. “Ain’t never private around here, man. We’re thinking of going to visit Gramps’ place once he heals up some.”
“That would be cool. He’ll need help once Dillon is back on tour.”
“Yeah. And he’s got a big place with no one else there.” Andy grinned a little. “Like y’all.”
“Uh-huh. Just like us.” And if those two camped out in the swamp, he’d send them out to hunt ‘gators.
“Don’t worry, man. We won’t invade.” Yeah. Andy seemed to think that would be awkward.
“You know we love company.”
“I know. I know you need some time off, too. I can see it in your eyes.” Andy shrugged. “Later on, sure.”
“You need some shit, too.” He met Andy’s eyes. “You need to get back to work. You need to get back on.”
“I know. I just been… Fuck, Sam. It’s been a nightmare. Between Jase and my damned leg? It was broke bad.”
“I know. That first few times, after the bad break? So fucking scary, man. I liked to died, but you gotta go do it.”
“I…” Andy sure seemed haunted, but he nodded. “While y’all are here. Gramps never had time, and AJ is just not enough help with Mini laid up.”
“Well, there you go. Me and Beau are one hell of a team.” He knew about this shit. Hell, he was the Hard Luck Kid.
“Yeah. Yeah. Missy is good at pulling gate, too.”
Sam chortled. “You know, man, that don’t surprise me a bit.”
“Yeah. We’ll work it.” Andy moved off to help lay out plates and stuff. Missy put on enough grub for a working.
Beau piled it on and he did the same, making a mental note to pull a couple hundred dollar bills and leave them under the cookie jar. Andy probably would have poisoned them, for sure. Missy not so much.
