I hope he has a plan because I sure as hell don’t.

Chapter 28

Lucas

Ipark the SUV a few streets over from the warehouse where they’re holding Jordan, and subsequently where I watched a man get a bullet through his skull.

I want nothing more than to storm in there and save her, but I can’t play with her life like that. It’s a surefire way to get myself killed before she’s safe.

I shed my suit jacket and glasses, roll up the sleeves on my button-down, and reach for the gun I have stashed under the driver's seat. It’s not standard issue for a bodyguard to carry a gun but this isn’t a standard situation. Emmett doesn’t check or have access to this vehicle, so I took a chance at placing a gun in here and it clearly paid off.

My training has me automatically checking the magazine for bullets, and then the chamber. I flick off the safety and decide that I need to do some recon before the cavalry shows up.

I tuck the Glock in the back of my waistband and weave my way through the streets until I’m almost to the warehouse. The last time I was here, I noticed only one guard at the door entrance but multiple cameras. This tells me they don’t want to look suspicious but still need good surveillance on the place.

I duck behind a building adjacent to the one Jordan’s being held in and watch the door for a few minutes. I don’t see any movement. It’s oddly silent which turns my gut because I know for a fact that Jordan is in the building and most likely with an army of men.

I’m about to move when a car pulls up. Not just any car, but Emmett’s car.

What the hell.

Emmett exits the driver’s side, mad as fuck, and Conner gets out of the passenger seat, looking annoyed and nervous all at the same time.

I’m close enough to hear my name come out of Emmett’s mouth.

“He should be here. José demanded to see all of us. He’s going to be pissed and take it out on me,” Emmett yells at a now stone-faced Conner. “Where the fuck is he, Conner?”

Conner says nothing and I decide maybe I can’t wait for Miller and his team to show up. I step out of the shadows and yell, “Here guys.”

I have no idea why both of them are here. As far as I know, I’m the only one who knows Jordan was taken, but what does that have to do with Emmett? I’m missing something.

Both heads whip my way and whereas Conner looks relieved, Emmett looks like a tomato about ready to burst. It’s clear that Conner doesn’t realize his daughter is here, and I don’t think Emmett is in the loop either.

“You’re going to get us fucking killed, you idiot.” He stalks my way, pointing a finger at me like a mad toddler. “Where the fuck have you been? I don’t pay you to disappear during a workday.”

He’s spewing curses in my direction, and as soon as he’s close enough I slap his hand away and backhand him across the cheek.

“Shut the fuck up, Emmett.”

“Did you just… slap me?” An incredulous look crosses his face as he cradles his cheek. I wouldn’t be surprised if he used that move on a few women himself.

I grab the collar of his overpriced button-down. “I’ve had enough of your shit, you assh–”

“Chicos.” I’m interrupted by a guard at the door. His gun isn’t pointed at us but he’s gearing up for a fight.

I let go of Emmett’s collar, more like toss him away from me, and stalk towards the door. I need to get inside the building, and this is the best way. Conner doesn’t hesitate to follow me, and I don’t look back to see what Emmett does.

I toss a thumb over my shoulder and give the guard a look. “Los malditos gringos.”Fucking white guys.

His stern expression turns into a laugh, and he pats me on the shoulder as I pass through the doorway.

Maybe I can get myself out of this.

I guess we’ll see.

We’re escorted to the main part of the warehouse where we were the last time. It looks no different except for the fact that there are three chairs lined up before the table that José sits at.

José doesn’t say anything but nods from us to the chairs. The guard who escorted us into the building stops me, taking the gun from my waistband, and then shoves me towards the chairs.
