I’m walking the floor at work when I get a call from an unknown number. I answer the phone and before I can get a word out, I hear a familiar voice. “He knows, Amato. You need to get out of there now.”

I freeze. It’s Gomez and he sounds distraught. I didn’t even realize he had this number.

“Who knows what?” I ask as I slowly make my way towards the elevators.

“José. He knows you’re a cop. I don’t know how, but he does. A low-level guy on the street said their boss just found out his biggest client had a cop in his midst. He said the name Cahill. They’re planning something big for you, Lucas. You have to get out of town, man.”

Fuck.

My cover’s blown.

“Thanks for the heads up.” I hang up the phone and take a deep breath. Emmett didn’t act any differently towards me this morning but there’s a possibility he knows as well.

I need to get to Jordan and figure out what I’m going to do.

The last few weeks have been slow-moving as far as the case goes, and Miller has yet to meet with Conner to pick his brain apart about the financials of the company because he’s been pulled away on another case. I have zero clue as to how Garcia found out that I’m a cop, but a man in his position always has his ways. We’ve been sitting on borrowed time and unfortunately for me, my time is up.

I don’t want to leave Conner in the building, but it’s safer for him here than it is with me. If they find out he’s connected to me too, it’s over for the both of us.

I enter the elevator and press the button for the garage. It feels like the ride down takes forever and when I get off, my phone rings again.

“She’s gone, Lucas.” Kyle's voice is frantic.

I stop dead in my tracks. “Who’s gone?” I look at my surroundings and don’t find anything suspicious. I keep my head down and get to the SUV as quickly as I can.

“Jordan. Her door was open when I got home from school. Her TV is on, her backpack is scattered everywhere. She’s not here, Lucas.”

“Go upstairs and don’t open the door for anyone. Do you understand me?”

“Yeah, okay. What’s going on, Lucas? I’m worried.”

“I’ll explain everything later.”

I hang up on him before he can ask any more questions and immediately check the tracking app I put on Jordan’s phone a few weeks back, praying that she somehow has it with her.

Holy shit.

She does.

And she’s headed southeast, away from San Diego. I’m pretty sure I know where they’re going. I’m only an hour behind her moving location, so I turn onto the freeway and follow.

I have a few hours to make a plan. One that covers every basis in case shit goes sideways.

I just hope I’m not too late when I get there.

Chapter 27

Jordan

“Ihave to pee.”

“What, bitch?”

“I said I have to pee,” I announce a little louder.

“We have direct orders to not stop for anything. You’re shit out of luck, bitch.”
