She shrugs a shoulder. “Sometimes I watch porn. Not often, but often enough to at least know the basics.”
I’m a deer caught in the headlights because she’s never told me this before. “I don’t even know what to say to that. But thank you. I’ll take all the advice I can get.”
“Try it for both of us and tell me if it works. You never know with porn these days.”
I chuckle and pop another bite of meat and cheese into my mouth. “I’ll be the guinea pig then. If I fail, it’s on you.”
“I’ll give you a day of paid leave if you fail. But something tells me that’s going to be impossible. The man is obsessed with you.”
I wave her off. “Eh. Obsessed is a strong word. There’s a mutual attraction for sure but I don’t think it’s anything more than that.”
“Why not?”
I hesitate and then say, “Because I’m pretty sure he’s not staying.” I finally voice the words that I’ve been thinking since he moved me into his place.
“I don’t understand.” Her brows furrow in confusion.
I let out a sigh. “He’s renting his place and it’s super sterile. It’s one thing to move into a place that comes withfurniture, but it’s another thing to not add any personal items to it. Especially after living there for a few months. That screams drifter to me. Like he could pack up and leave at a moment's notice.”
“Okay, it’s a little weird but he’s also a dude. Maybe he just hasn’t gotten his stuff out of storage. Have you asked him about it?”
“Not exactly. But he’s super cagey about his job and his past. He shifts the conversation anytime I mention them. I’m afraid he’s just going to do the same thing if I ask him about his living situation.”
She eats a few more grapes while she contemplates what I’m telling her. “The guy likes you. That, I know for certain. He came in and asked what your favorite coffee was, and he moved you into his house when you had nowhere else to go. Well, you could have come here but I digress. He’s been protective of you and got your freaking camera back from those crazy people. If you think he’s not staying, then you should probably talk to him about it. You don’t want to fall for him any more than you already have if he’s just going to leave.”
I blow out a deep breath. Maybe Ishouldtalk to him about it. I just don’t want it to be another glasses situation where he lies to me.
“You’re right,” I tell her. “I should just talk to him. I’m probably being paranoid.”
After everything I’ve been through, I think that’s what this is. Paranoia.
We aren’t even together. Sure, he called me his, but that was in the heat of the moment.
I’m reading too far into this.
I jump at the chime of my cell phone and take it out of my back pocket to answer.
It’s my landlord. “Hello?”
“Jordan, it’s Gary. I thought I’d let you know your apartment is ready.”
I blow out a breath. “Already? Um…That’s great.”
“Yup. She’s all yours. Everybody did their job quickly. You can move your stuff back in whenever you want. I’m also going to pro-rate you for the week and a half.”
“Wow, thank you. I don’t know what to say but I appreciate it.”
We say our goodbyes and I hang up and stare at my phone. The bubble I’ve been living in for the last week and a half has officially burst, and now it’s back to reality.
I look up at Penny. “That was Gary, my apartment is ready.”
“That was quick…you don’t look too happy about it.”
I plant a smile on my face. “I am. It’s unexpected, that’s all.”
“Is it because maybe you don’t want to leave Mr. Big Dick’s house?” She quirks an eyebrow at me.
I chew on my bottom lip. “Maybe. But I should probably give him his space back. I don’t want to overstay my welcome.”
