Nathan and I both spun in our seats to find Lucifer standing right behind us. Heat bubbled up in my chest at the intense look in his teal eyes. The bench lifted under me as Nathan stood, folding his hands behind his back like a proper soldier.
“Not at all. I offered to keep her company until you returned.”
I turned to stare at him, a skeptical eyebrow raised. That wasn’t how he’d made it sound when he came tobust me out. I’d thought he actually wanted to hang out. Like a friend.
Ignoring the slight sting, I pushed to my feet and hopped over the bench. Lucifer pulled his eyes away from Nathan and looked me over from head to toe, his gaze lingering on my mouth on the way back up. He reached for me and I let him take my hand, sensing the change in the air that accompanied his teleportation.
“Thanks for babysitting, Nathan,” I said, giving him a mock salute with two fingers. “See ya ‘round.”
He frowned and opened his mouth, but then the world collapsed and spat us out in an enormous bedroom with an equally enormous bed. I winced as my ears popped, but I wasn’t about to tell the Devil that my dad could teleport better than he could. Hell, I couldn’t do it at all, so I had no room to complain about the instantaneous travel.
At least, not yet.
“Something wrong?” Lucifer asked, tipping my chin to meet his gorgeous eyes.
I shook my head. “No, just… glad to see you. I wasn’t sure if you’d make it back tonight.”
“I said I would.”
“I know,” I replied, holding my hands up, “but things have been so busy lately with the coven and planning the wards and investigating secret tunnels and whatnot, it just—I wasn’t sure if—”
He smirked. “You weren’t sure if I would have time for you?”
Feeling a tiny bit childish for the admission, I nodded. “But what you’re doing is so important—”
“Lexi.” I shuddered at the way his voice caressed my fraying nerves. “It is important, and it does keep me busier these days than I like, but rest assured, I would love nothing more than to abandon this world to its own devices and spend every second of every hour with you, right here. In this room.” He lowered his face to my ear, hot breath washing across my cheek. “I’ll put up wards to keep every living being out and fuck you until you can’t take anymore.”
I gasped as he gently bit down on my earlobe, and my hands gripped his pressed shirt, wrinkling it. “You’ll be busy a while, then.”
“I know,” he growled.
Then his mouth was on mine, hard and hot with a frantic edge that I felt all the way to my bones. Big things were in play all around us, any moment could bring chaos and death down on our heads, and we had no doubt that moment would find us sooner rather than later. When we got the chance to be together, we couldn’t afford to waste it.
Music blared from my pocket, but Lucifer snatched my phone and tossed it out the door, where it clattered noisily down the hall. “Not this time.”
He lifted me over his shoulder as I laughed, then carried me into the bathroom. I couldn’t resist smacking his ass. “Hey, where are we going? There’s a perfectly good bed right there.”
“You need a shower.”
I smacked his ass harder. “Are you saying I stink?
The world tilted as he dropped me back down to my feet, steadying me as I swayed, then he backed me into the wall and caged me in with his arms. He lowered his face and clamped his mouth around a spot just below my ear. Andsucked. Like a vampire without the teeth, though I wasn’t sure I would’ve stopped him then, either.
His tongue traced a path of Hellfire along my skin. My magic responded in kind, pushing against his, pulling it back, dancing like a bonfire in a storm. I lifted my leg to wrap around him, to bring him closer, but he pulled away and smiled devilishly.
“You had some caramel there. You need a shower or you’ll be sticky all night.”
I looked up at him through half-lidded eyes. “I planned to be, regardless.”
By the slight widening of his eyes, I could tell my joke had caught him off-guard. The heat coming off his body increased as he reached over and flipped the water on. Like the shower in his pool room, water poured from the ceiling like rain, creating soft white waves of steam around us.
Our clothes vanished, including my amulet, and I gasped at the sensation. Lucifer had never been so impatient that he skipped the stripping part. I opened my mouth, a question on the tip of my tongue, but I was suddenly thrust under the boiling water, my feet lifted right out from under me. His hand fisted in my hair and he tugged my head back as my legs wrapped around his waist, the hard length of him trapped between us. He pressed his nose and lips against my neck.
“You…” He trailed off, leaving his thought unfinished.
I tried to turn my head, but he held tight to my hair. “I?”
He thrust against me and a whimper escaped me.
