“Daniel came to check his office. I think he suspected something. When he saw me, Joel attacked him from behind. I heard a big fight and then Daniel’s truck. I wanted to see what happened, but I couldn’t.”
Daniel and Henry. Two of the most important people in my life… I couldn’t lose them like I lost my parents. This cycle of death and loss by this jackass had to end.
And we were going to be the ones to end it.
She went quiet after that. All the energy seemed to have been sapped from her and I couldn't blame her. After everything she'd been through and the amount of pain she was in it was no wonder that she'd finally passed out. She'd told us what she needed to and with that task done her body finally told her enough was enough.
So, I called the sheriff. “Hey!”
“Listen, we’re still trying to find the kids. Is this important?” he barked, his voice coming in and out over the bad connection.
My heart raced. “Joel Northman is the one who killed Al. And he’s killed others. And he’s about to kill again… my brother, Daniel, and some other people.”
“Shit!” His voice came out crackled. “We have a damned serial killer in Mystic Hollow! And all the cops are stuck deep in the woods tracking down idiot kids. I’ll send help when I can.”
I hoped the help would come sooner rather than later.
“Thanks. Until then, we’ll do what we can.”
“I knew you would,” he said, a knowing tone to his voice.
We pulled in at the ER, and I stopped the car right in front of the doors, trying to give as little distance that Carol had to walk as possible.
“I can take her,” Beth said. “You guys save Henry and Daniel.”
“Thank you,” I said, trying not to cry as she helped Carol from the car.
Luckily, a couple nurses were outside with a stretcher in seconds. My heart ached as I watched them wheel her into the hospital, with Beth racing after them.
“Please, let her be okay.”
“She’s tough,” Deva said, reaching out and squeezing my hand.
She is.
I shifted the car into gear. As much as I wanted to focus on Beth, we had some murders to stop.
Chapter Twenty-Seven
Emma
We took a gamble and headed to my house, with Deva beside me performing a tracker spell. She said it was tricky, but easier with someone she knew, so she was hoping to be able to figure out where Henry was, and thought it’d lead us to Joel. My chest ached with every mile that passed. Maybe we were heading in the wrong direction. Maybe Joel had had them all meet somewhere in the middle of nowhere.
We really had no idea. All I knew was that I’d tried calling Henry and Daniel over and over again, and neither of them had answered.
Neitherof them. It made me want to just start bawling then and there.
Finally, Deva dropped her hands from her head and said, “Henry is definitely still at your house. I can feel him very strongly.”
Thank goodness!
Then, she grabbed her phone and started texting rapidly.
I frowned. “Although it’s convenient Henry’s meeting with his whole group tonight at our place for the first time...”
“You think Joel has his hands in that too?” Deva asked, frowning.
“I wouldn’t put it past that snake.”
