“Ha. Don’t I know it. Carry on. I’m curious.” Cheryl stopped walking and gave all her attention to Fiona. Her mouth curved up.I might as well surrender. It would be minutes before they would all turn on me.

“Okay. Stop. Fiona had the dumb idea to do a squeeze bunt. It’s a girl move in softball. It worked thisone time. It’s not going to win games every time and I would’ve let Garth hit the winning RBI in.”

“He still gets the RBI. He also gets the confidence and they understand how the little plays can make a big difference.”

“That’s not baseball, Barbie,” I scoffed and caught Cheryl eyeing the two of us with a knowing grin. “No one does that in the majors.”

“Yeah, well, hate to break it to you, but the chances of them making it that far are slim. It’s more about life skills. They’re learning how to work together, take chances and how putting pressure on the other team is just as effective as yourholyhomeruns.”

“Holy homeruns,” I cackled and Quinn joined me with her giggles. “That shit is hilarious.”

“Shit!” Quinn yelled and I got the eye from Cheryl. I took her off my shoulders and held her with my non-throwing arm. I had a pretty nasty stare and zeroed in on her.

“What am I going to say, Quinn?”

“I can’t use adult words.” Her little mouth trembled and I handed her off to her mother. “I’m sorry, Uncle G. It won’t happen again.”

“Nice try, monkey.” I ruffled her hair and met Cheryl’s eyes again. “Sorry.”

“No, it’s not like you’re the only one who’s said a cuss word. The other day she called me a bitch. She’ll learn. Maybe I’ll bust out the soap like Mom and Dad used to.”

I laughed. “Please film it.”

Cheryl gave Fiona a nod and turned to leave.Finally.“Fiona, next time you’re at the hospital, let me know. We can grab coffee and gossip about old Gid here.”

“I’ll put it first on my list. I would love to get some dirt on him.”

“I’m so glad you two got paired together. I have a feeling it’s entertaining.”

“It’s something, all right,” Fiona mumbled and I nudged her with my hip. Cheryl caught on immediately and I shooed her away. I did not need my meddling sister to have any sort of thoughts about us.Nope. Not one errant thought.“I’ll see you next week, Cheryl.”

“Bye, guys. Quinn—say bye.”

“Bye!” she shouted and we all laughed. She was such a damn pistol. But after they walked to her car, it left me and Fiona alone. Something buzzed between us. It wasn’t pure lust, no. It was something else. An anger, an urge to push the other person further. Who would lose in this game of push and pull? I had no idea. When her clothes were off, I stopped caring.

“How about that drink you suggested?” I slung my arm around her, but she shoved me off. She had been acting weirder than normal, and my attention to it irritated me. I shouldn’t have cared.

“You were a bit of an asshole today.” She waved at the MILF, who’d lingered. She’d been doing that quite a bit lately and it irked me. I’d already decided not to mess with the kid’s mom—I guess I did have some scruples left in me. I wanted to tell Fiona, but I didn’t think it would make her proud of me.

“Barbie, stop fighting it. We both know you want to get in my car with me.”

Chapter Fifteen

Fiona

How presumptuous he was…and right. I pursed my lips and made the decision to use him entirely for his body, not his personality. I craved the release, the distraction, the chemistry that was hot enough to help me forget. Yeah—I wanted all that in the shape of Gideon Titan.

A shadow of guilt stole over me.What would Justin think about me now? Would he think I was trash?

Did he have any idea of the daily struggles I had with emotions…he being one of the reasons? My stomach soured, but then Gideon gave methatlook and it all went away. He provided the perfect opportunity and there was no chance I would pass him up. I was an opportunist.

“Well, am I right?”

“Goddamn it.” I brushed past him toward his beautiful Corvette. It wasn’t large enough for what I had in mind, but it could work. “Let’s go, piece of meat.”

“Is that what I am to you? A piece of sex meat?” He opened the door for me and paused with his face inches away. I tightened my jaw, with my spine standing straight. I jutted my chin out.

“Is your onefeelinghurt if I say yes? Aren’t I just the same to you?”
