Chapter 32

Faith

“Do you want the puppy or the kitty?”

“What?” Faith asked, looking around her in shock.

She was sitting in the kitchen at her family’s home in New York. Her father was sipping his cup of coffee as he read the newspaper. Her mom was standing in front of the stove making breakfast.

“Pancakes, dear. Did you want the puppy shapes or the kitty?”

“Both,” she answered.

She was home, her parents were here, and she was about to have the best pancakes of all time. Tears sprang to her eyes.

“Are you okay?” her mom asked as she slid two kitty-shaped and two puppy-shaped pancakes onto her plate.

“Yeah. I guess I’ve just missed this, missed you both so much.”

“Silly, we’ve been right here with you the entire time.”

More tears escaped.

“Where’s your brother?” her father asked.

She shrugged. “I don’t know. We got separated. I’m sure he’s fine.”

Faith took a bite of her pancake covered in syrup and moaned with happiness. No one made pancakes like her mother. She could stay here forever.

Her mom served her father his pancakes. He reached to hold her mom still while he placed a kiss on her lips. Faith couldn’t look away. She had forgotten how loving her parents were toward one another. They were still in love after twenty years of marriage and raising two teenagers.

Her mom finally took her own seat and locked eyes with Faith. “You need to find Felix. He needs you.”

Faith shook her head. “Felix doesn’t need anyone.”

“You’re wrong,” her father said.

“Look, you made Felix keep track of me, picking me up and dropping me off at school. Now he’s different. He doesn’t think of me as his sister.”

Her parents kept smiles on their faces. Her mother answered. She reached across the table to hold Faith’s hand.

“We didn’t have Felix pick you up and drop you off to keep you safe. We did that to keep him safe, keep him grounded. He needs you to remind him of what the most important thing in life is: family and love. You are pure love, Faith. He will need you.”

“Someone else needs you as well,” her father said, reaching to take her other hand.

Immediately, thoughts of Logan appeared. Was he referring to the sexy alien? How would they even know of him? They had died years before Logan came to Earth. Her father squeezed her hand.

“I approve of him,” he said.

Her mother squeezed her other hand. “I do as well.”

“How do I know he feels the same way?” she asked her mother.

Her mom smiled at her father. “You know because he is your other half. You won’t be able to imagine life without him. Now, it’s time for you to go. You have two people who need you, need your love to save them both from a life of misery. Live your life, and know we are always with you.”

Suddenly, she wasn’t in her parents’ kitchen anymore but running down the subway tunnel toward the fading lights. She had to reach that subway car, or it would leave her behind. Felix and Logan needed her. She needed them as well.

The next moment, the lights were coming toward her fast. She froze in place, covering her eyes, and waited for the impact. It was jolting, nearly knocking her on her backside. Darkness overwhelmed her. She could hear a voice calling out in the darkness. A familiar voice.

“Faith! Come back! Do you hear me? Please, Faith. I need you. Faith!”

“Logan?” she croaked.

“Thank fuck!”
