Chapter 29
Logan
He rubbed his chest again and again. It felt like someone was squeezing his heart painfully. The sensation was uncomfortable and unfamiliar. It distracted him as he watched the security video feed. He had to push this disturbing feeling down and focus and find out what happened to Faith.
All three of his warriors guarded his back against the humans who at first refused to show him anything. After a threat from the human president, Dome Leader Winstead backed off but also refused to help him pull up the feed.
“It’s not one of my people. The answers are with your warriors who were supposedly guarding her. You all had a hard on for the girl since you arrived. Did she convince you guys to release her by sharing hercharms?”
All four Drastans growled angrily at what Dome Leader Winstead was implying. Logan stepped forward, his warriors directly behind him.
“Nothing untoward has taken place with Faith. For you to suggest that my warriors would release her instead of following my orders to guard and protect her is outrageous and an attack on their honor as a warrior. If any of them feel that the insult deserves the Drastan Code 13, I will back them up.”
The humans may not understand the Drastan codes, but his tone and the way his warriors stood with shoulders back and ready for action were enough to make the human step back.
“Uh… Captain Coor, I believe I have something,” the only human soldier who offered to help them navigate the security system monitors said.
Logan moved forward, leaning over the shoulder of the soldier. “What did you find?”
The soldier pulled up three different feeds. All showing the back hallway behind the store where Faith had gone to try on clothes.
“This one here shows the current feed right now.” He pointed to the monitor on the left.
“This one shows the day and time that your warriors and the girl were at the store. Ten minutes before the girl went missing, to ten minutes after.”
“There is nothing there,” Winstead said, squeezing in to look.
“Here and here. Watch.” The soldier pushed buttons, replaying over and over the back hallway video. “There!”
“I see it. Play it again,” Logan ordered.
“See what? All I see is an empty hallway!” Winstead grouched.
“There is a glitch. It repeats.”
“So. The cameras aren’t as special as yours. What does that mean?” Winstead asked, standing and crossing his arms over his chest.
“What it means…” Logan slowly explained. “It means that someone with access to your security system clipped the feed in multiple places and tried to reattach. It’s a sloppy job.”
“That is outrageous! No one under my command would do such a thing!”
“Then you are saying your security is so sloppy, they allowed us disgusting aliens in here to tamper with it?”
“My security is top-notch!” Winstead growled.
“Then they are traitors to your own people and to you.”
That statement hit the mark. Dome Leader Winstead’s face turned bright red. “Find out who they are!”
“Sir, I believe I can find the clipped feed,” Warrior Lake offered.
Logan didn’t reply, but Winstead did. “Give the Drastan control of the security system!”
“Yes, Colonel.” The soldier sitting at the console immediately stood and moved out of the way.
Within seconds, Warrior Lake had reattached the clipped pieces of video feed. “They thought to trash the clipped pieces but cleared nothing else. This was missing.”
Logan and Winstead moved forward and watched as two soldiers dragged an unconscious Faith out the back door of the store, then carried her to another lift that required security access.
