Chapter 27

Logan

He stood next to the destroyed truck. It was on its side from having an explosive set off underneath it. It was a wonder no one died. His hair on the back of his neck was standing up and he couldn’t ignore the feeling they were being watched.

Dome Leader Winstead was pointing out the obvious.

“They buried the bomb in a shallow hole. The truck stopped directly over the bomb. This was well planned.”

“Agreed,” Logan said.

He glanced over his surroundings covertly. There were two humanoid forms lying flat on top of a dune. If he had his warriors with him, he would send them out to investigate. For one minute, he thought to have Dome Leader Winstead send some of his soldiers but decided not to. He wasn’t impressed with the human leader’s abilities and trustworthiness.

Logan rubbed his chest. His heart was beating faster than normal, and he had a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach. Something bad happened or was about to happen. He knew Faith was in trouble somehow. His communicator went off.

“This is Captain Coor.”

“Captain, the female Faith is missing,” Warrior Lake said.

He froze in place. “What do you mean by missing?”

“We took her shopping at the stores, as per your request. She went to try on clothing in a room in the rear of a store but never came out.”

“What level are you on?” Logan started toward their vehicle without saying a word to Dome Leader Winstead. His movements were noticed, and Dome Leader Winstead and his warriors followed him.

“Twelve.”

“Search that level thoroughly. Question anyone who was around at the time she went missing. I’m on my way to you.”

“Captain Coor! Where the hell are you going?” Dome Leader Winstead demanded.

He never stopped his strides. “Faith is missing.”

“You allowed the only witness we have to escape?”

Logan stopped at that and turned to confront the human. “You will watch how you speak to me, Dome Leader. Faith was in no shape to flee on her own. That means someone within your walls aided her or took her against her will. I promise you; we will find her. If I find your people took her and harmed her, you will find yourself called under Drastan Code 2.”

“What does Code 2 mean?” Winstead asked.

“Drastan Code 2 states a Drastan warrior may seek a battle to the death of anyone who harmed or killed the warrior’s mate.”

Winstead frowned. “But the girl is human.”

“She is my mate, claimed or not. As such, she is considered Drastan. All our laws and protections go to her.”

“I had nothing to do with her going missing.” Winstead took a step away from Logan. The male was useless as a leader, but he wasn’t a complete idiot. He knew danger when he saw it.

“We’ll see about that. We need to go back to the dome immediately, and I want full access to review all your security feeds.”

“You don’t have the access level for that.”

“I’ll get it by the time we reach the dome,” Logan promised him while climbing into the passenger side of the jeep. He would prefer to drive himself, but his anger and fear for Faith’s well-being did not have him in a good headspace.

He hadn’t prayed to his gods in a long time, not since he was a boy who lost faith in his father. He lost faith in a lot of things at the same time. But now, he said a silent prayer to the Drastan gods of old and even to the human god. He would not lose his Faith.

Any gods listening. Keep her safe.
