Chapter 22

Faith - The next morning

She stretched her arms and legs on the bed, feeling better than she had in ages. If only she could drag this bed back to the subway car. It was too big, and it would draw too much attention. At least she could take the sheets, even if she had to hide them under her clothes.

The treatment the Drastan doctor gave her for radiation exposure, along with eating a solid meal and getting much-needed rest, was doing a world of good. She was still full after last night’s spaghetti dinner. She felt guilty she was receiving such good things and her brother and her tribe were probably eating canned beans again.

Today, she would find a way out of the dome. She was determined. She had an excellent memory. It was a must for living in the subway system. They were always trying to find faster ways around the area that would keep them out of the line of sight of the dome people.

If she could get some supplies to take with her, medicine and food, then she could offer that to her tribe. Maybe it would ease tensions she knew would be there because she got herself caught. That was one of the five rules living below ground she had broken.

The tribe comes first.

Always do your part.

Never give up.

Follow the tribe leader’s orders.

Don’t get caught above ground.

Until now, she had followed all the rules. Faith had gotten caught above ground. Even if she escaped the dome and made it back to her tribe, there were going to be consequences. Felix wouldn’t be able to keep that from happening, even if he wanted to.

Sitting up, she reached for the basket of clothes. A pair of jogging pants and a smaller T-shirt were her choice. Her plan was to take another glorious shower, dress, eat any leftovers from last night, then let them take her back to the medical facility. Luckily, Doc Haggard wanted her back for several more treatments. It worked out perfectly. She would scout out the exits and maybe even talk to some of the other humans to see if they would give her any helpful information.

She went to the bathroom and jerked her sleep shirt off. Then she had the warm water going and stepped inside. There was no way she could hold back the moan of pleasure.

“Oh God, this is so good.”

“Who are you talking to?” a man’s voice asked from the open doorway of the bathroom.

She yelped and almost slipped. Covering what she could with her hands, she squinted, trying to see through the foggy glass doors.

“Logan, is that you?”

“Who else would it be?”

“I don’t know, Lake or Powers.”

“Have either of them been inside here while you showered?”

“Of course not. Why are you here?”

“I came to let you know they have delivered the morning meal.”

“Morning meal?”

“I believe your people call it breakfast.”

“Oh. Okay. I’ll be out in about ten minutes.”

He didn’t reply or move.

“Logan, you can leave now.”

Clearing his throat, he responded. “Yes, I’ll keep the break fast warm for you.”

“Thank you.”
