Chapter 21
Logan
It took all his willpower not to follow Faith to the bedroom and ravish her. He could scent her desire, so she wasn’t unaffected by their natural chemistry. It was more than chemistry. All day, he couldn’t keep his mind off her, wondering how she was doing, if she was scared.
When he saw her reaction to the food, he wanted to give her all the noodles and bread. She must have been starving for her to hide the food in her shirt. Seeing her condition made him realize how bad the circumstances were for those in the subway system. He could understand why they would take such risks like the raid. It didn’t excuse their violent actions, but he could see their reasons behind it.
He had meant to question Faith about her tribe and see if she would offer answers about who organized the previous night’s events. His commander gave him two days to get answers, then he would have to turn her over to the dome leader.
That didn’t sit well with Logan. He argued with his commander for the first time in his career. He cleaned up the food as he remembered their conversation.
“Sir, Dome Leader Winstead is hiding things from us. I believe that his own people are feeding information on which shipments should be attacked.”
“Do you have proof, Captain Coor?”
“Not yet.”
“What has the girl told you?”
“She’s terrified and injured. I am hoping to get answers from her once she is fed, healed, and rested.”
“Two days is all I can give you. Unless you can get some evidence, I can take to the human leaders, the girl will have to be turned over.”
“She is afraid for her life. I do not trust these humans.”
“Give me something I can work with. Unless you feel a connection to this female, my hands are tied.”
Logan had thought about the connection his commander mentioned.
If he claimed her as his mate, she would not have to answer to the human leaders or government. She would be considered Drastan.
Claiming her was drastic and crazy. He barely knew her. But he felt strong, unexpected emotions toward her. But was it enough to warrant a claim? Every time she looked at him with those green eyes, it drew him into her, wanting to decipher all her secrets.
He finished his meal and wrapped the food containers and placed them in the cooling unit. Walking around the unit, he pulled out his scanner. When they first arrived, they had found five listening devices placed strategically throughout the quarters. They disposed of the ones they found earlier. Now his scanner was picking up two more devices.
“Sneaky bastards.”
He quickly got rid of them. He would have to wait until Faith woke before searching her room. His bedroom was clean of devices and suspected that the other bedrooms were as well.
Going to the door, he opened it and went out into the hallway. He found two human soldiers standing guard. Did the dome leader think to keep them prisoners?
“Is there anything we can do for you, Captain Coor?” a soldier asked.
“Why are you outside of our quarters?”
“We have orders to keep the prisoner from escaping.”
“Who exactly is your prisoner?” he asked furiously.
“Uh… well… It’s the subway rat.”
“What?” He didn’t realize how angry he could get until now.
The other soldier quickly amended what the other said. “The woman from the raid. She lives in the subway. We were ordered to make sure she didn’t escape until we brought her in for questioning.”
“You can leave.”
“We can’t leave our post. If we don’t follow orders, we will be reprimanded.”
