Chapter 14

Faith

She felt like Alice falling down the rabbit hole. It was one of her favorite fairy tales growing up, but right now, she wasn’t interested in seeing where the rabbit would lead her. If her brother and the others knew where she was going—the dome—they would lose their shit. How was she going to explain all this? Felix was going to kill her. That wasn’t her most pressing situation. No, the large truck approaching with alien warriors and probably human soldiers was what she needed to focus on.

Fear set in as the large truck approached, stopping about fifteen feet away. The driver who got out looked familiar. It might have been the one from last night.

“Captain Coor. Glad to see you are okay.”

“I survived the storm. We have a guest. Call ahead and have our medic on standby.”

“Is the female harmed?” another warrior asked, getting out of the back with three human soldiers.

“Scrapes and bruises, but she may have hit her head. I want her checked, just in case.”

It was irritating to have people talking about her while she was standing right there. She was about to say something but decided better of it. The less she drew attention to herself, the better her chances were for escaping.

Two of the human soldiers stormed toward her. “You are under arrest by the orders of Colonel Winstead,” one of the said.

When they tried to grab her by the arms, Logan blocked them and growled. Did he growl for real? Yep, and he growled a second time, making the human soldiers take a step back.

“Do not touch her!” Logan ordered in a menacing tone.

“We have orders from Colonel Winstead to bring any of the tribe scum to detainment for interrogation.”

“I’m in charge of this mission. I will decide who will be interrogated and by whom. I do not take orders from humans, and I won’t tolerate violence against females,” Logan said with such harshness in his voice, Faith shivered at his tone.

The human soldiers hesitated before backing down. “Colonel Winstead won’t be happy about this.”

“I’ll have a conversation with Dome Leader Winstead once we get back.”

Faith listened to the entire exchange. Logan looked pissed. He never acted that way with her. If he had, she might have peed her pants from fear. But she didn’t fear him. From the moment she woke up and looked into his dark eyes, she felt safe. When he turned to face her, he had nothing but concern and kindness in his eyes.

“I don’t want you to get in trouble because of me,” she said.

“I won’t be in any trouble. It’s these humans in charge of the dome that will have a lot to answer for. Come, let’s get you back so you can be treated for your injuries.”

He motioned for her to follow, but she shook her head.

Logan tried to reassure her. “Do not be afraid. I will allow no one to harm you.”

“You say that, but those other guys plan to interrogate me.”

“You will have to be questioned about last night’s raid and your involvement. There’s no getting around that.”

“You might as well kill me now because I’m a dead woman walking as soon as I step foot in that dome.”

He frowned. “I told you no one will harm you.”

“I’ve heard what happens when Dome Leader Winstead takes people in for questioning.”

“What happens?” he asked curiously.

“They don’t come back.”

The look he gave her made her shiver all over. It wasn’t one of anger toward her, but it was anger and suspicion. She did not want to be in the same room with him and that dome leader. Faith almost felt sorry for that human. Almost. She wasn’t lying about the rumors. Everyone she ever heard of that went into the Brooklyn dome for questioning never returned. It was something the tribe leaders told people never to do.

No matter what, don’t let them take you to the dome.
