Chapter 13

Logan

Logan growled. “I told you, we do not enslave people. Not anymore.” He chuckled when she tripped at hearing his response. “Just joking. My people have never enslaved others.”

“Is it true that your people have plenty of females?”

“I do not lie.”

“I don’t know you, and from my experience, men lie all the time.”

“I’m an honorable warrior.”

“A captain, right?”

“Yes. You ask a lot of questions.”

“You’re the first alien I’ve ever met. I have a lot of things to ask.”

If she knew more about him, she might learn to trust him, then she may give him the information about the raid and who planned it. It was worth a try.

“Ask your questions.”

“Really?” she asked with excitement.

He nodded.

“How old are you?”

“Twenty-eight cycles,” he replied

“Cycles? Is that the same as Earth's years?”

“I believe it is equivalent. What is your age?”

“I’ll turn twenty-two in three days.”

“I would have thought you were younger.” He was relieved she was of a mature age. He would not want to have these sexual feelings toward someone younger.

“It’s the no-sunshine lifestyle in the subway system. Unfortunately, there are those who are younger than me that look twice as old.”

“Why is that?”

“Lack of food and a hard environment to live in.”

He frowned. Dome Leader Winstead made a promise to distribute food and other supplies to the underground people. Clearly, the human was not an honorable male.

A memory from his past flashed in his mind. He was eight years old, and his father had promised to take him hunting with the other boys at the academy on their annual retreat. Logan waited and waited on the steps outside the academy. It soon turned dark and cold. His father never came. His grandfather had been called and came to pick him up. He would never believe his father after that. It wasn’t the first time a dishonorable male had let him down.

“Why do you look so angry?” she asked.

“Are there any humans among you that believe in keeping your word? Who has honor?”

“You must understand. The nukes destroyed not only our planet, but much of our humanity. Our faith in our government, faith in our fellow citizens, and our own beliefs had been shaken to the core. There are a few of us who held on to what we could. But with survival, even the best of us falls far below grace.”

“That is deep for someone so young.”

She shrugged. “I had to grow up fast. I haven’t been young in a long time.”
