Chapter 12
Faith
For the first time since she could remember, she woke feeling refreshed and full. Her stomach didn’t growl like it usually did. If it wasn’t for the fact she was lying in the arms of an alien, she would have been happy to remain where she was.
His arms wrapped around her, and she had turned in her sleep to where her front snuggled up against his chest. Her head rested just above his heart. It was strange to listen to an alien’s heartbeat. It sounded normal, like a human, except it beat slightly faster. She moved back just a little to get a better view of him.
His eyes were closed, and she admired his long, thick eyelashes. Women would kill for his eyelashes. His cheekbones were chiseled like a sexy Greek statue. There was a shadow of a beard cleanly trimmed that made him look darkly handsome. She gazed at his firm plump lips and suddenly wondered if aliens kissed like humans. His eyes were dark and… open.
“Hi,” she whispered awkwardly.
Smiling at her, he said, “Hello, little human. Did you rest well?”
“It’s Faith, and I did. Were you able to get any sleep?”
“I rested some. Let me check outside. I believe the sandstorm has passed.”
He stood and walked up the slope of the box to the opening. She couldn’t stop from admiring his fine backside. Man, he was hot. They didn’t make them like that here on Earth. Not anymore.
“It would be good for us to leave now to go to the dome before another sandstorm starts. They are unpredictable. My people may already be looking for me.”
Damn it! She should have tried to sneak out while he was asleep. Now, what was she going to do?
“Do you need help getting up or walking? I could carry you again.”
“Great, that would just add to my humiliation,” she grumbled under her breath. She didn’t expect him to have heard it.
“Why would that humiliate you?” he asked.
She got to her feet and angled herself to keep her balance. “Never mind. I can walk.”
When she got to the top of the box, she was amazed that something of the old bridge infrastructure had survived. This was the first time she had been out this far. Usually, Felix liked to keep their tribe close to the subway. It was probably lies to keep them all under his control. She looked around, taking in the destruction and how it also had a sort of beauty to it.
“Have you seen your planet’s surface much?” Logan asked.
“A little. We keep to the subway tunnels for safety. It was many years after the nukes hit before we could come above ground because of the radiation. The sandstorms were much stronger than the one from last night.”
“When we got the first look at your planet from space, it reminded me of old folk stories of a demon world where all naughty Drastan children would go if they didn’t do their chores.”
Faith laughed. “We had stories like that too. My mother would say that the boogeyman would visit me at night if I didn’t eat my vegetables. I hated vegetables. I would do anything to eat vegetables that my mom cooked for me, just one more time.”
Once they reached the top of the box structure, he jumped down. Then he raised his hands to take her waist and helped her to the ground. It made her feel small and dainty to have him lift her so easily. His hands lingered on her until she moved away from him.
“Did your parents survive?”
“No.”
“Did any other of your family or friends survive?”
“Only one other family member survived I know of,” she said.
Faith didn’t elaborate any further. She wasn’t sure if she could trust him and she had to protect Felix and the others, no matter what. They were the only family she had left. At least, Felix was her family. He had tried to protect her from this raid and its repercussions. It bothered her he might have known about the weapons and the plan to attack like Waller did.
“Faith?” Logan asked
She had gotten lost in her own thoughts and walked ahead of him. At the sound of her name on his lips, she turned back to look at him.
“Yes?”
