Chapter 16

Devlon woke up fully alert. Years of serving his home world and being in battle trained his senses to never fully rest. Something was off. Slowly he pulled away from Heather’s sleeping form, covering her up. He didn’t want to scare her in case it was nothing.

Lt. Colonel James had men assigned to protect him, which was why he left his own warrior at the subcar to make sure no one sabotaged it. Devlon agreed to it as long as the soldiers remained hidden where he and Heather wouldn’t be bothered by them.

He walked over to the corner of the room where it was darkest and remained still. A Drastan’s senses were much better than a human’s. He could only detect one male human in the other room. As the person made his way into the bedroom, Devlon waited for the perfect time. Just as the male lifted his hand with what looked like a weapon, he sprung into action, moving quickly to kick the weapon out of the male’s hand.

The male tried to lurch past Devlon toward Heather on the bed. He hit the end of the mattress, shoving it out of place. Devlon had the male by the neck, with his arm wrapped around his throat.

“Let me go!” the male yelled out.

“What the hell is going on?” Heather demanded, reaching to turn on a light.

Devlon tightened his armlock so that the male had less oxygen flow making his struggles weakened. “This male broke in and attempted to attack us while we slept.”

“Should I go upstairs and get help?” Heather looked at him and he hated seeing the fear in her eyes.

He didn’t want her to leave his sight. What if there were more waiting outside the apartment? He didn’t scent others, but they could be down the hallway. “Use my communicator to call for Lt. Colonel James.”

Heather put on the comm link and hit the button. “Connect me with Lt. Colonel James.” She paused a moment, and said, “It’s Heather. We have an intruder. Devlon is restraining him.”

She disconnected. “He’s on his way. Let me see if I can find something we can tie this guy up with.”

Devlon watched as she wrapped a blanket around her body, reminding him that he was naked. She came back from the bathroom and wrapped a towel around his waist. “Thanks.”

“No problem. I couldn’t find anything like string or cord to tie him up with.”

“I’ve got him. Go ahead and grab your clothes and get dressed.” He would be damned if he let anyone see her naked. It was bad enough this perpetrator had. He had to fight his instincts to squeeze the man’s throat until he passed out.

Heather rushed into the other room and came back with her clothes, going into the bathroom just as the front door was shoved open.

“In the bedroom!” Devlon called out.

The male tried to kick free, but Devlon shoved him down to the floor, keeping his hands held behind his back and using his own weight to keep the male still.

Two human soldiers came into the room, cautiously holding up their weapons. They were followed by the lieutenant colonel. David paused, looking at the man on the ground and then at Devlon wearing nothing but a towel. He motioned for his soldiers to take the man on the floor in their grip so that Devlon could stand up, then tossed him his pants. Devlon quickly pulled them on and left the towel on the bed.

“Where’s Heather?” David asked, looking at the empty bed.

“I’m here,” Heather said as she exited the bathroom, dressed except for her shoes.

He walked over to her and wrapped a protective arm around her shoulders. The fact that she allowed him to comfort her like that in front of others was a sure sign that she’d been shaken up. Devlon glared at the man who’d dared try to attack them.

“Who are you and why did you try to attack me?”

When the man didn’t say anything, Devlon moved up and gripped his chin tilting it up painfully so the human had to look up at him. “What did you want with me?”

“Nothing!”

Devlon used his other hand to squeeze the male’s neck. “Wrong answer. Tell me what you were doing here and why you attacked me?”

“You can’t hurt me. I know my rights. I ain’t saying anything without a lawyer present.”

Devlon narrowed his eyes at the male. “Wrong. You attacked a Drastan. It is within my right to question you and execute your punishment as I see fit.”

The human’s face paled as he glanced at the lieutenant colonel for help. “He’s lying, right?”

David shook his head. “No, he is not. If he took out his blaster and blew your head off, we’d have no say in it since you attacked him.”
