“Well according to Logan, Steel should gag Jackson.”

By now, Slate had tears running down his face from laughing so hard. When he finally got himself under control, he said, “Damn, I’m eager to meet Jackson. I think he’s just what my brother needed.”

“Yup, he is,” Colton said, while clearing the table. “I think it’s time for us to get going or otherwise, I’ll be late.”

“Okay, let’s roll,” Slate said, still smiling as he set the apartment’s security alarm.

On the way to the hospital, Colton could feel excitement building in him. Who could he help today? What injury would challenge his abilities and knowledge? He couldn’t believe he wasn’t dreaming. Just a few more minutes and he’d be entering a real-to-fucking-goodnesshospital treating actual patients—and he would be part of it today, tomorrow and for the next two weeks.Holy Fuck and Hot Damn!Never in his wildest thoughts did he ever expect to be here, just a few minutes away from experiencing his dream of nursing.

Colton saw another male nurse enter seconds before he and Slate reached the door. Stepping inside, he spied Dr. Luna speaking to the receptionist; standing next to him, was the nurse. He walked over to Dr. Luna and stood quietly off to his side, waiting for an acknowledgment. Steel followed behind.

Dr. Luna turned toward him, smiling. “Glad you’re here. Colton, I’m pairing you with Pablo for today. He’s one of our senior staff.” Turning slightly to face Pablo, Dr. Luna said, “I want you to work with Colton and show him how everything is done.” After Pablo nodded, Dr. Luna said, “Great. Let’s start morning rounds.”

Chapter 12

After entering room ten, Pablo read from the patient’s chart, “Male, Mexican Wolf shifter, about thirty years old, admitted late last night due to silver in his blood. Severe cuts to his neck, right shoulder, right arm, and back which haven’t healed. Patient is on Chelation Treatment but still hasn’t been able to shift.”

Dr. Luna turned to Colton, asking, “What do you recommend we should do in addition to what is being done?”

Colton turned to the doctor, “May I examine him?”

“Go right ahead.”

Colton stepped forward and started his examination. He could see the patient was in pain when he laid his hand on the man’s chest. Humming to himself, Colton started to slowly rub the man’s body, concentrating first on his wounds. Next, he proceeded to repeat his movements all over the man’s body, massaging as he went. He could sense the man’s pain start to recede and saw the wounds knitting together. Finally, he stepped back and said, “I don’t recommend any other treatment, the silver is out of his body and he should be able to shift shortly.”

Slate stared at the scene in front of him—Dr. Luna had a speculative look on his face as he studied Colton; the man in the bed sat up, seemingly out of pain.Holy shit, what just happened here?Slate had seen silver poisoning before and knew how much the man was suffering before Colton laid hands on him. Narrowing his eyes as he looked at the doctor, he realized Juan knew something about Colton he did not. And he didn’t like it. Or the fact the Doc kept it a secret from him. He had to tell Steel about this but how could he—without revealing why they were still here.Double fuck, he needed reinforcements.

Colton turned to Dr. Luna, saw the look on his face and just like that, anxiety filled his gut. What was that about? He didn’t think he’d crossed any lines here but then, maybe.Oh shit, maybe he shouldn’t have touched the patient like he did. Although he couldn’t figure out why it would be a problem. Maybe there was a rule about patient interactions he didn’t know about. Dr. Luna was still looking at him. Nope, he fucked up. Better try to set it straight or he knew he would be sent home tomorrow.

“I’m sorry Dr. Luna for touching the patient. I forgot to ask what the proper procedure was before starting my examination.”

“Nonsense. You did just fine.” Dr. Luna tore his gaze away from Colton to look at the patient. “How do you feel Miguel? Do you think you can shift?”

“Si, Si, I feel good.”

“Fine. Pablo, stay with Miguel until he completes his first shift and make sure all of his wounds heal fully.”

“Si, Dr. Luna.”

“Colton and I will continue the morning rounds.”

Slate followed Juan and Colton out of the room and grabbed the doctor’s arm. “Juan, we need to talk.”

“In a minute. Colton, would you please check out Maria Alejandra in room 4. She delivered her pup early this morning after a very hard labor.”

“Will do.”

The doctor waited until Colton entered Maria’s room before turning to Slate. “What did you want to talk about?”

“I know what I saw in Miguel’s room was not normal. You weren’t surprised so who is Colton and why was he able to heal the patient so quickly?”

“Ah-h-h-h, I haven’t seen one my whole life, but I had a feeling that Colton was one and he just proved me right.”

“One what?”

“A natural healer.”

“A natural healer? What… uh, who…fuck, what’s that?”
